  • Thanks for the reply. Naturally, this is creating even more questions if you’ll indulge me. If an almost four-X increase in file size is to be expected w/ ProRes 444, why do people use it in the first place? I looked at the quality of the ProRes/H264 clips on the same timeline, and there’s no perceivable difference in quality. Both appear to edit the same, although my test only included my one clip. What’s the difference between ProRes 444 vs. the LT version? (My Streamclip doesn’t even have the LT version as an option, so I guess I’ll look for a different converter)

To answer your question, I’m still kicking it old school with FCP 6.0.6.

Cool! You’ll forgive my latest post then, as you no doubt cover it in your articles 🙂

Thanks. I appreciate your insight. I’ve been scarfing up a lot of info on this particular forum. My next post will no doubt be right around the corner 🙂

Steve, any recommendations for a great external monitor for a Canon? I tried using the video output to an extenal 17″ LCD monitor (standard pc monitor) and it looked awful. Totally low res and not usable for pulling focus. Maybe there’s a 5″ monitor or something that clips onto the hotshoe? Time to start searching 🙂

Jeez Dave, I can either do one or the other, not both. Thanks for ending this conundrum for me.

Ah, Dave…and here I was thinking only pc’s got bitchy when it came to RAM. You’re correct, I was running the original 2GB up until a few months ago when I added 8GB to try speeding up my AE CS4 (before I learned that CS4 with a bunch of extra RAM really gave diminishing returns). I shall ditch that original 2GB like you said for now to see if that does the trick, and then double it to 16GB soon. Gracias!

Since I just added that 1TB drive (it didn’t replace my system drive, I just added it to keep my projects off the system drive), are you saying there’s a setting in AE to redirect the cache to a different place? Seems like this new drive would do the trick.

I have a feeling I’m going to need to do an OS reinstall. This thing just seems pokey, I guess. Maybe it isn’t just AE. Thanks.

No, I’m simply keyframing the Scale and adjusting as needed. This “Detail Preserving” effect is elusive. I can find the “Scale” effect, but I’m not seeing it when I drag it onto my footage. I’m using AE CS4, I wonder if it’s not available in this version. Anyway, thanks. I’ll keep at it.

Sorry. OS is 10.6, and I’m running CS4. (I’m not in front of the Mac right now, so I’m not totally getting that OS version)

This may be as good as it gets with my setup. It works, just not as fast as I was hoping. Clearly, my hopes need tweaking.

Thanks. I guess what I don’t quite get is that AE will gobble up 3GB of memory when it loads, but then when I’m rendering something, I see down at the bottom that (for example) 59% of 3GB is being used. My renders really go slow, so why doesn’t it just dip a little more into my RAM well?

Thanks for the link. I’ll read up on all of that and see where it takes me.
