Hi, Paul. I actually considered this before I posted, but thought it would just look like hell and make the project very nasty looking with all those segment splices. It seemed like marking the volume bar at those locations where you’d splice would be a lot cleaner. I have no problem using the volume bar for editing. I’m quite comfortable with it from using Audition. (I just can’t figure out how to turn the damn thing on 🙂

Hi, Don. I did find these while searching, and saw how this turned the volume bar on and off…I just couldn’t mark any locations to make volume bar edits. Lemme go back and check this again later. Thanks,
Paul

Guys, sorry for the late response here. I appreciate your input. I’ve tried contacting the cable channel, but haven’t heard back yet. Fwiw, this is a “Top 20 video countdown” show, which of course includes the host’s audio plus snippets of music videos.
Until I hear from the channel, I’ll shoot for -6 peaks and -12 averages and go from there.
Ciao.

That’s what I’ve been doing, but when I dump the HD footage into a SD FCP timeline, it gets sorta crappy looking. It had been suggested to me by one of the FCP shazzam elders (sorry…did I just date myself with that one?) that FCP does a rather poor job downconverting HD to SD, which is why I used AE.
No offense taken by your signature. The AE manual doesn’t address “haze” 🙂

I’m dealing w/ a similar situation here. We shoot 1080p at 24 frames, which is ultimately destined for SD cable TV at 29.97. We also use the XDCAM, but I use the XDCAM Transfer app to import the footage from the flash cards. It’s been suggested to me that rather than doing this, I should use our Kona board to capture the footage, as this would help a great deal with the downconversion to SD before I bring it all into FCP. (The problem I’ve been dealing with is that the footage in FCP doesn’t look as good as it should, but I’m not quite sure why yet)
Is this what you’re saying here? Thanks,

May 30, 2008 at 5:49 pm in reply to: Examples of good quality HD-SD conversion available?Convert your HD to SD before you start editing. I would capture through the Kona board if you can by playing the footage through that instead of just importing it as a file. We’ve done that in the past with P2 footage by laying it off to DVCPro HD tape, then recapturing it as SD for the edit.
Interesting. The camera we use is the Sony XDCAM EX-1, that uses the 16GB SxS cards. I’ve been using the XDCAM’s xfer application to get the footage into the computer. Would you still recommend your way, or are the native files out of the XDCAM still the way to go? And if they are, how would you recommend I downconvert them once they’re in?
Thanks, Walter.

May 29, 2008 at 12:46 pm in reply to: Examples of good quality HD-SD conversion available?Yes, we do have an AJA Kona board. We’ve got the component video from the Kona board running to our broadcast monitor.
The problem we’re fighting is that we’ve got three different types of files that we’re editing together, which are XDCAM footage shot at 1080p, music videos ripped from dvd’s (not in HD), and graphics animation that was done by a third party (also not in HD).
This is starting to get off-topic, but I’d like to ask what workflow you’d recommend for this type of project. Since the only HD stuff we have is the Sony footage, would it make more sense to downconvert that stuff outside of FCP first (perhaps with AfterEffects), and then do my FCP editing with a SD sequence?
Thanks.
