I have this same transfer issue and would like some additional advice. I have large 4+Gig vid files that are on a G-Drive Apple MacBook and I’m trying to get them on my PC with MacDrive(trial version I downloaded today) When I plug in the drive, my system sees the HD, but none of the files. Would using a different HD, like a Western Digital or Seagate instead of the G Drive make any difference or not?

    Thanks,

May 27, 2008 at 7:44 pm in reply to: Pop/Click & Meter questions

I’ll correct myself, I’m using a pop/click eliminator in the effects tab, noise reduction section of Audition. (I do have a pop filter for my mic.) When I’ve been adjusting the settings for sensitivity, thresholds, detect & reject, if I go too far, I eliminate the pops/clicks, but also distort the narration. Today I’m being more scientific about the adjustments and keeping track of what I’m doing and the results. I went through the Total Training DVDs for Audition quite a while ago, but it was geared for music. It was helpful in getting an overview of the software and what it can do, but it didn’t help me for narration.

I found a thread in here that you are writing a second book. It would be great if you could have a chapter (or 2 or 3…) addressing audiobook narration issues. 1) Common problems and mistakes and how to avoid or correct them, 2) the editing sequence you follow after the narration is done, 3) how do you train your ear to sense when something sounds good and you should quit messing with adjustments. I’ve done alot of research this winter, but have never been able to find answers to these questions, especially 2 & 3.

Ty, thank you very much for your input.

Thanks for such an indepth response!

After researching VO talent and doing a lot of listening, I feel that this narrator is very capable. I’m two hours from Denver and I’ll be sending her there for some training with a VO coach.

Being in the very dry Colorado climate, we are dealing with the sticitions, but that is managable. The glottal noise is what is stumping me. We tried various head and neck positions and mic placements, but I’m still looking for better results. (Though in my research, I have come across recordings that are much worse, I don’t want to be in that catagory!) The distortions I am causing is due to my inexperience in using a pop/click filter. I’m not getting the setting correct and in the process I cause distortion. I’m starting over today, using small incriments of adjustments and keeping track of the results, hoping that I will find an area that at least reduces the glottal noise, but won’t harm the narration. The pops at the end of words or in between words, though tedious to remove, I don’t mind dealing with. I am wanting to reduce/eliminate the glottal sounds that are in the middle of words.

I am amazed at how sensitive my hearing has become during this process, being able to hear mouth noises that before I never paid attention to.

Thanks for your response Ty, I appreciate your time.

Thanks for your response Mike, especially on a holiday weekend!

Yes, I realized I had goofed, but hoped I could backtrack in order to save the situation. I thought I had it corrected when I could access some footage, the audio and stills, but not being able to access other footage at all, even in a new project confused me. I did not change the name on the third hard drive and the same thing happened. Anyway, I’m lucky I could save two of the four projects.

As always, thanks so much for your help.

The headphones are connected to the mixer.

Yes, I did try a different cable, however nothing changed.

I have a second system, however is it quite old and is used only for Photoshop. If I tried to load it up with additional software it would probably burn itself into a pile of ashes.

I called Alesis, and they suggested that I uninstall/re-install and make sure I have the latest driver. After doing that exercise I am up and operating in Audacity. In Audition I can record in multi-track view, but nothing in edit view. I’m thinking that my “vintage” Audition isn’t happy with the new updates and might need to be retired.

Thank you for your response and input, I appreciate it!

Thank you for the link to the tutorial, I certainly will take a look at it. I went through the Total Training DVDs for this version of Audition, but it is all geared toward music, so not too helpful for my situation.

I posted this question on the Audacity website and one response hinted that maybe something went out in the Alesis. I’ll follow through with that lead and see where it gets me.

Thanks again for your input, I appreciate it.

    Thank you for your response.

I am using an Alesis Multimix 12 Firewire.

Yes, the pan setting on channel one is set in the middle. When recording, I hear audio in both ears on my headphones and audio pans correctly in the phones when adjusted. The LED meter shows that it is recording in both channels. I don’t see that the master control section has an option for controlling the left/right channel going out to my computer. Any other suggestions? I double checked all connections and they are tight, with good cables and based on the diagram in the Alesis book they are correctly routed.

My knowledge in audio has been weak and in the past year I’ve made the effort to improve my audio quality to improve my video work. I’m now being approached to use my soundbooth to record audio books, so my learning curve just got steeper.

My understanding is to record audio books in mono rather than stereo. Is that correct? If so, can I take the recorded right channel, copy it to make a left channel? Will this work or will the quality be compromised. I would appreciate some advice.

    Thanks again,

Thank you so much for all your help Jon!

Yes, you are correct….I’ve never “cleaned-up” my system over all these years as it has been very stable and I’ve not had any issues. I understand that adding something new to an older system can cause a problem. I’ll take your advice and hopefully it’ll work. If not, I’ve got a good computer repair guy (he’s just not familiar with editing software) that has worked well for me for several years.

Thanks again, your time is appreciated,

April 10, 2008 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Timeline audio to moniter speaker problem

OK, I realize now that when I open up a new project, I was blowing by the screen that offered the presets you’ve been talking about. I see where the Canopus DV-NTSC is selected. I changed that to DV-NTSC. Custom settings>Editing Mode is at DV Playback.

Playback Settings brings up a box with the following:

Audio Playback on: DV hardware OR Audio hardware
Real Time Playback on: Desktop only OR DV hardware only OR Both
Export to Tape on: DV hardware OR Audio hardware

I put Real Time Playback on Both, selected Audio hardware and opened the project, imported a 1 minute clip (no effects were applied), double checked the preference settings and the program settings. The timeline could only play for 1-2 seconds and then would stop, as if it was dropping a frame. Good news is that the audio did go through the mixer and to my moniter speakers during that short playback moment! Your directions were right on the money!
I opened another project, this time selected DV hardware and the same thing happened. The computer crashed twice to an abrupt black screen and came back up stating a serious error had occurred.

It seems that Premiere is trying to do what the new settings are requesting, but Windows is not cooperating. Even though the audio is now where I want it, the timeline is not usable. I am very happy I understand where the settings are to make the adjustment for using my new monitor speakers, but do you have any idea on what could cause the timeline to behave as such?

    Thanks again Jon
