  • Timeline audio to moniter speaker problem

Posted by Pattie Olson on April 7, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Recently I purchased an Alesis firewire 12 mixer and M-audio speakers because a new project I accepted required recording a book to CDs. I used Audition for that project. Now that I’m done and back to video editing, I cannot get the audio from the Premiere timeline out to the new speakers, nor can I get the audio to the speakers when I’m capturing.

Device manager shows that Alesis is working properly and is enabled. Sounds and audio devices in the control panel all show Alesis and volumes are up. Premiere preferences show Alesis in the Audio Hardware and the ASIO settings show the master device as Alesis. System sound config is Alesis for both input and output. I have the latest Alesis driver. Timeline volume is up and when played registers on the Premiere audio mixer.

Audio does go out to the speakers via the mixer when in Premiere and choosing a Smartsound track. But after saving the file and importing it into the timeline, it does not go to the speakers, but it does go to the 1/8″ green output in the back of the computer and is heard via headphones.

Audio does go out to the speakers via the mixer when playing a timeline or watching a preview in Encore.

Audio also is heard when playing a CD or DVD in my computer.

I’m using Premiere Pro “vintage” from 2004 on Windows XP Pro, Pent 4 and service pack 2. I unistalled and reinstalled Premiere with no problems and no different results.

I think I’m just missing something simple, however, when I called Alesis, they stated that a sound card is a sound card and should work straight across the board. They thought that my Premiere may be a bit too old and not have the routing capabilities. Is this possible, if so is there a work-around? Also, when I first purchased the mixer and speakers four months ago, I was only working in Audition, I never tried them in Premiere, so I can’t say it ever worked.

Thanks in advance for any insight to this issue.

Make sure that your Playback settings are set to the external device. That might help.
    Project>Project Settings>General>Playback Settings

    Thanks for your response Jon,

I followed your instructions and came to what I think maybe the real problem. When I click on playback settings, a window comes up titled “Canopus Real Time DV Playback Setup” and has the following boxes to select:

    Enable moniter out preview.(checked)
    Show buffer status.
    Stop playback at dropped frame.(checked)
    Enable still image cache.

The guy I purchased my system from four years ago also installed Canopus Storm on here. Because this window came up instead of the one you said should have been there, I’m not able to make the proper selection and Premiere can’t send the audio to the external device.

Can you tell me (step by step as before) how I might be able to get to the actual Premiere playback settings?

Because I seldom use Storm, I could remove it, but would the proper Premiere window then come up after I click on “playback settings?” I really think you have the answer here, I just am not system savy enough to know where to look.

I appreciate your time, thanks in advance for your response.

The reason why the Canopus interface appears instead of the one I said is because the project is a canopus project. If you open an Adobe software mode project (DV or HDV) then you will get the interface I mentioned. I don’t know whether you’ve been using the canopus effects, but you can import a project into another one. IF you have been using canopus effects they’ll be dropped. But you’ll have the same edit with any adobe effects used still in tact.
Just open a new project that is the same type as the one you’ve got (DV NTSC?) or what ever it is with the Adobe Presets. Then go to import and import the project.
USe the instructions I gave for the playback issue – hope it all comes together. You will probably need to go to Edit>Preferences>Audio related settings to set the ASIO to your mix desk.

    Hey Jon,

The video files in my current Prem project were captured via Canopus but I haven’t done any editing in Canopus, it’s all done in Premiere.

I just opened a new Prem project and before I imported anything I went to the project settings but the same Canopus interface box came up as before. I’ve now noticed that directly under General and before the Video options box, there is the option for Editing Mode which lists Canopus Real Time DV, but the box is not hilighted so I can’t change it.

When I looked in the manuel on how to access that box so I could change it, all I found about project settings is that “Capture cards certified as compatible with Adobe may install their own optimized presets when installed.” Do you think this happened, if so, how do I access the un-hilighted box so I can change the default?

I double checked Edit>Pref>Audio related settings to set the ASIO and all is good there.

    Thank you very much.

Pattie, Canopus Storm is just hardware used with Premiere to make DV projects with realtime effects using the Canopus card.
You will need to start a new project and use a Preset that looks like a folder called DV. The Canopus Folder will have its own DV folder inside don’t select this one. You can still use the Captured footage from the Canopus card.

Once you start a new project using the DV preset that’s not in the Canopus folder. Try getting to the settings the way I explained.

Once you start a project you can’t change the project type. It’s started as a Canopus DV project it will stay that way and keep using the hardware with it too.

OK, I realize now that when I open up a new project, I was blowing by the screen that offered the presets you’ve been talking about. I see where the Canopus DV-NTSC is selected. I changed that to DV-NTSC. Custom settings>Editing Mode is at DV Playback.

Playback Settings brings up a box with the following:

Audio Playback on: DV hardware OR Audio hardware
Real Time Playback on: Desktop only OR DV hardware only OR Both
Export to Tape on: DV hardware OR Audio hardware

I put Real Time Playback on Both, selected Audio hardware and opened the project, imported a 1 minute clip (no effects were applied), double checked the preference settings and the program settings. The timeline could only play for 1-2 seconds and then would stop, as if it was dropping a frame. Good news is that the audio did go through the mixer and to my moniter speakers during that short playback moment! Your directions were right on the money!
I opened another project, this time selected DV hardware and the same thing happened. The computer crashed twice to an abrupt black screen and came back up stating a serious error had occurred.

It seems that Premiere is trying to do what the new settings are requesting, but Windows is not cooperating. Even though the audio is now where I want it, the timeline is not usable. I am very happy I understand where the settings are to make the adjustment for using my new monitor speakers, but do you have any idea on what could cause the timeline to behave as such?

    Thanks again Jon

It sounds like this system is a little older nowadays. I’d probably try to repair install Premiere Pro.

Then if that didn’t fix the error I’d uninstall, reboot, reinstall PPro, but that will mess with your Canopus card so that will need to be uninstalled and reinstalled too.

I’m assuming this system hasn’t been cleaned up (application wise) for some time. It would probably work best with a complete windows reinstallation and everything get reinstalled from scratch.

Thank you so much for all your help Jon!

Yes, you are correct….I’ve never “cleaned-up” my system over all these years as it has been very stable and I’ve not had any issues. I understand that adding something new to an older system can cause a problem. I’ll take your advice and hopefully it’ll work. If not, I’ve got a good computer repair guy (he’s just not familiar with editing software) that has worked well for me for several years.

Thanks again, your time is appreciated,

    Pattie
