Not so sure about that – Compressor does a much better job of spreading the load to all processors than FCP…

The cluster storage is defined under the Advanced tab… it defaults to /var/spool/qmaster – type ⌘-shift-G in a Finder window and put that in to get to that folder to remove old temporary files… redefine it to your media drive if you like…

You don’t need multiple computers to speed up compressor, just use QMaster and set up a virtual cluster in your own computer.
It’s in System Preferences/Apple Qmaster. Select Share this computer as Quick Cluster with services. Share Compressor. Options should be 1 instance for each of 2 processors, so if you have an Octo, set it to 4 instances. Click Share…
Then when you submit from compressor, change it from This Computer to whatever you named your cluster. Works like gang busters…

Dude – AVI says it’s Quicktime?
What does that mean?
If you’re capturing from tape (which your initial post lead me to believe) – what format? If DV, then use the Detect Start/Stop menu item and it’ll place markers. Otherwise, there is Scene detection software available I gave you one, someone else posted another.

I do have experience with this workflow – we edit and assemble (online) from P2 in FCP, then output to D5 or HDCam and take it into a DaVinci Tape to tape session with a colorist. We’ll usually do it on final (with titles/graphics), but sometimes we’ll do it on a clean assembly, then bring it back for titling.
We have also brought a TIFF sequence to a post house and had them lay off to D5 or HDCam when it was a less expensive route than renting the deck…
We do this all the time.

That’s only a little bit helpful. It looks POTENTIALLY that it MIGHT be POSSIBLE to affect some fixing of the footage. But the only way to tell is if you are able to post to a web space or email me a couple of 1 second movies IN THE ORIGINAL FORMAT of the footage.
