LOL love it. I especially appreciate all the “we don’t do crap work, so we need to get a rate/price that reflects our mastery” here at the Cow. So many creative types undercharge.

Disclaimer: We’re not looking for new clients, at least until next month.

I agree that platforms that offer CMS tools are the way to go, We’re big fans of MODx and Drupal for higher-end sites, and WordPress for more basic sites.

I’m not sure Squarespace is a great solution for many companies, for a lot of reasons- not open source, almost all their stuff looks very similar and very bloglike, etc.

If that works for your business, great. But it’s the online equivalent of using the same print brochure templates and swapping out logos for your company. Or, the equivalent of using the same Motion templates and just changing some colors. Which, I’m sure, a lot of video prodcos do, daily.

  • You guys are awesome. I don’t know that I would have the balls to do that, then again it depends on how screwed you felt and how much potential future business this customer could give to you.

In general, if there’s any possibility that the messup was due to my company’s fault, I eat it. Happily. Like Ron said, file under “tuition”. Because you never know, that client could bring in future business. Happens all the time.

Then again, if the client is a sociopath all bets are off.

And there are a lot of sociopaths in this world, especially lately.

Right, client communication is key. For us, in general our clients are fine with us taking excerpts and posting online with our logo or bug. But not for an entire video.

Ron’s advice is sterling: I’ve had two occasions like this, where a friend-of-a-friend type client tried to screw me. It’s always best to bring in the person who referred you, it ups your chances of being paid about 90%.

    Hi Walter,

Just to add my 2 cents as a 15 year web veteran: Media Temple. We’ve had so many web hosting vendors, from DIGEX and MCI in the 1990s, to Broadspire, to Godaddy, Dreamhost, etc. Not to mention all the hundreds of sites we’ve set up for clients on dozens of other providers. Media Temple is just amazing. We love them.

I agree that it is silly, but I’ve had this happen to our little video production company too. In my case it was working for a Fortune 500 firm on an in-house HD video project, and I ended up having to get proof of $2M liability.

And yes, most bigger companies expect you to up your rates if they make you jump through a ton of hoops. So hopefully your client will be like that, too.

    Good luck!

I know! That’s exactly it, you make a ton of cash but it costs $4,000 a month to pay the mortgage for a small place. Ugh! Still, gotta love the opportunities LA presents.

Another data point- I know a few editors who clear an easy 6 figures, too. In LA. Working non-Union mostly.
