Not surprising this is still a common situation so many years on. I will say, a great client is worth moving heaven and earth to keep happy. So if they’re a great client, no big deal. We have one of those now, their home office in the UK demands they keep all files. Our contract says fine but we offer no warranty with regards to their usability/etc. In this case the client producer just needed to tick a box for their corporate owners. The drive sits on a shelf gathering dust and there it will stay.

Things change if a client is sketchy. We try hard not to work with that type, but sometimes one will slip through.

    1. Their house, their rules.

    2. If you are really so terrified of getting Covid that you don’t want to get tested for Covid, you should stay home all the time (and definitely not fly to jobs).

    3. You have brought up plumbing emergencies a few times… it’s interesting, this fixation on plumbing emergencies you seem to have. Is your production an emergency situation? Or an elective one? Also, see #1.

Greg, it feels like you’re really just blowing off steam here because you lost a job because you refused to follow your client’s safety procedures. Your business, your choice- you made it, and now unfortunately you get to live with the loss of income and possibly the loss of a client.

I suspect there are many people who are reading this thread and thinking “Nope! Not jumping into THIS mess, not after last Thanksgiving when my crazy QAnon uncle ranted at me for 6 hours about vaccines and microchips.”

    I am not those people.

Greg, life is simple: their house, their rules. They’re not even forcing you to get vaccinated- just to provide a negative test. If you’re not willing to get tested to do the job, you lose the job. And honestly, you should lose the job. If you’re running around doing production where you’re in super close proximity to crew and clients for 10-12 hours a day and you’re not getting tested beforehand? Shame on you.

We couldn’t work like that. Your mileage may vary. But for us, that’d be a “sorry, no” unless they fully covered the employee’s wages and overhead and a nice profit for our video agency.

  • Yes, we have a Shogun recorder and use it a lot. That’s certainly the “best” way, as it gets 10 bit 4:2:2 ProRes HQ files. It does indeed bulk the rig up a lot, too. So for stealthy stuff, no go. Transcode only.

  • They truly are. My editor friend who works in Hollywood confirms your suggestion that H265 just needs to be transcoded no matter what. Even on the newest boxes.

$14,000 for a 1 year option is a nice start.

I am on an airplane at least twice a month. Here’s what I do:

    – Pack your camera and your lenses in one carryon (if possible).
    – Pack your batteries in another, along with media and laptop.

Then Pelican Air cases. Add TSA locks to them. They are cheap enough to pay for when the odd one is broken or “misplaced” by TSA.

Overall, TSA does their best, and I’ve had a lot of really great connections with them talking about celebrities and fun on set. But I definitely noticed a reduction in “I swear we packed that” once the locks went on.

I’d go FedEx but… in my world, things change really fast. So putting it in baggage is perfectly fine.

Oh, and of course bring your proof of being media with you, to get that important media rate service.

It’s definitely a FCP XML import issue: AAF is working and individual clips are working just fine. Once I’m done on this project I’ll see if recreating complicated FCP XML causes the same issue. If not, I’ll post. Otherwise, let’s see what BMD does in its stable release.
