We bought a PMW350K in December and we love this camera. The images are fantastic, it is nice and light, fully featured, sips power, has a decent stock lens and an amazing viewfinder.

Value for money – exceptional. Quality – unreal.

We are adding a NanoFlash (or equivalent soon) and it is very likely that we’ll buy a second PMW350K this year, if not 2 more.

Only one negative. Because of the viewfinder / lens combo it is very difficult to access the zoom controls with the left hand over the lens. This is due to the size of the lens barrel at the mount junction and also because there is a rigid control cable with an in-line resistor (I think) that blocks access to the zoom control. This cable can be gently moved out of the way but it creates tension on the cable.

Here’s a link to a YouTube video of some clips I shot in western Canada using standard camera settings:

Not to beat a dead horse but the addition of the PMW350 (and its 2/3″ sensor) to the line really changes things. Why? Because EX means 1/2″ sensor to pretty much everyone…..

So, back to my original request – to change the name of this forum to “Sony PMW Series XDCAM”

All this branding info is confusing.

The EX Series XDCAM moniker is fine but it might indicate “entry level HD” to some which the PMW 350 is decidedly not.

No matter. There is a lot of jargon mixed with acronyms out there!

My original suggestion was to rename this forum “Sony PMW Series Cameras”….that would seem to make sense given there are 3 cams in the line: PMW EX-1R, PMW EX-3 and PMW 350. Ron?

Seems like there might be some cross-indexing going on?

This is the main forum list:

    Sony DV
    Sony EX Series XDCAM
    Sony F900 & PDW Series
    Sony SRW-5500, SRW-5800

I don’t see a Sony CineAlta forum until I enter the EX_3 forum and see this header:

SONY CINEALTA: Sony CineAlta HD Forum HDV Format Forum Sony CineAlta HD Articles

I’m sure there would have been a chorus of very angry PDW 700 and 800 owners had Sony upped the bitrate on the PMW350 to 50 MBPS. Sony is “segmenting” the market very nicely and what they are doing makes a lot of sense.

We captured directly from the HDSDI tap on the EX-3 into the HDSDI input of a KONA LHE on a recent greenscreen shoot. The results of the keys are dramatically better than using 35MBPS video.
