Been saying for over a year now that the days of Quick Time are numbered. Apple had no interest in moving it to 64bit and it has clearly become Frankenstein’s monster over the years.
Apples solution to that has always been to ditch it and move to something new and they now have AV foundation.
The new QTX players are scaled back and I ‘ve expected to see support for QT to diminish as time goes by.
Anyone who built their post model on needing QT (or any Apple proprietary product) was only looking at short term needs.

Ah H264 that fantastic high quality codec.
I wonder why no high quality cameras use that codec and use RAW instead.
As posted you need to up the datarate and even then you maybe seeing issues being at 8 bit.
Id test using a 10 bit uncompressed output.

Yup that’s the way it works.
I shoot 1080 on my motorbike helmet gopro but only output 720 for upload to youtube.
I can frameflex in on the 1080 sources and then transcode and bake in without quality loss unless I push beyond the 720 pixels mark. Then the image starts to get scaled.

In Avid the term we use is a same as source export.
We effectively create a flattened timeline(using video and audio mixdowns) to create a single export that has just one codec in it at the resolution we want. We then take the to Squeeze.

You can use the send to squeeze option but this defaults to a QT reference and that won’t always work (if you have AMA sources for example)

But we regularly just use MC and a custom QT export to H264 and they look ok. Not great and very slow but more than enough for preview.

Sorry for the delay!
My solution was to install the Quadro 4000 drivers and then install the GTX 580 drivers. I think the 580 drivers end up being the ones in use but as the GPU card is the most important that seems best.

As said it’s all down to the scaler.
If you bring SD into an HD project you are short of pixels so scaling up and you are having to make new pixels by interpolation.
However even in an SD project scaling up and you are loosing some pixels and having to create new ones from the ones left.
Either way you are pixel mangling and it’s just how good your mangler is.
Frame Flex is useful in taking HD content into an SD project as it allows you to access less than the HD frame size so potentially still shrinking the size rather than previously where HD footage would be scaled to SD and then potentially scaled up.

I’d agree Legacy FCP is already dying out and there maybe a few hangers on in 5 years but not many.
All the work is shifting to tapeless formats and FCP legacy isn’t being supported to cope with new formats.

One thing I would point out is that FCPX is a very different way of working and we find editors going from more traditional track base NLEs find it a hard transition so I can only imagine it to be the same going the other way.

So be prepared to struggle and curse when you find yourself having to adapt to a different mind-set and workflow.

And yes I’d go the Avid route. The Academic license is a good way to learn but the license prohibits doing commercial work on it of course.

You have it working now and getting the re-link steps right was the key.
So your original steps were fine. You didn’t need to do the earlier step of liking the original AMA clips to your transcoded media.

It’s a complete red herring this idea that you have to relink the AMA clips to the new Avid media.
Makes no difference but because it’s on the web everyone does it….

Sounds like a playback display issue.
Try opening the console under tools and entering “tearingfix”
Then ok.
Restart MC and see what that does.
If that doesn’t help then google MC display tearing. There are a few other solutions.
It’s most likely an issue with your screen refresh rate and MC playback rate.
