  • Why on earth would you deliberately aim to have an FCP legacy to MC workflow? Bad enough having to do it every now and then. But to plan it that way…
In MC 24fps should be fine.

  • I’d look at some proper training. There is just no substitute for real teaching by somebody who actually knows.
Not sure where you are located so https://www.vet.co.uk based in London may not be practical. But I deliver a specific Avid Media Management course that covers AMA import and relinking for VET and we do offline online workflows.
your right there are lots of workflow solutions and you use different solutions based on the jobs needs. That’s why you need to know the principles and theory rather that how to follow a set of tutorial steps.

If you do decide to switch you should be able to sell the old dongle as they cost a lot to buy now. A customer with a serial number can request a dongle updater and cross trade.

Apart from I think one physical damage (replaced by Avid) I’ve had over a dozen for over a decade trouble free.
You can protect them by using a short usb extender so they don’t get bashed. But honestly functionally a dongle is great.

Here’s the link to the redemption process:

    https://www.avid.com/US/support/upgrade-video

But I’d seriously re-consider. The dongles allow backwards version support (license activation is just 1 version back)

Dongles require no internet access to validate.

Basically dongles are the so much more flexible.

What are you hoping to gain by moving from dongles?

Yes that’s correct. The Transcode dialogue since V7 offers 2 compatibility tick options, one for frameflex and one for the color transformations. If you tick then then the results are “baked” into the transcoded media so compatible with older MC versions.
Leave them unticked and the media is transcoded without those transformations applied and the transformations are then re-applied as metadata to the resultant transcoded media so can continue to be adjusted/changed.
This works well for the color transformations but is seriously crippling with the frameflex (instead of the scaling being applied to the source media at greater than HD it is now limited to the max res of MC at HD)

And if you AMA link you can the log-c LUT via the source aettin7g. If you consolidate that stays as a real rime effect. If you transcode you can bake in.

RTAS is applied to the whole track. Use audio suite if you need to be more specific.

June 28, 2014 at 8:13 am in reply to: Same as source export – MXF

Same As Source just means don’t transcode. The Wrapper has no real impact. So H264 in QT to H264 in MXF is transparent in quality. SAS should be quicker as well.
The only impact changing the wrapper has is the wrappers ability or not to carry metadata and if thats passed across.
That’s effectively what the old log and transfer resolved in legacy FCP. QT has poor metadata support so the metadata was transfered to the clip info when a file was rewrapped to QT.

  • No 4k in Avid (yet) but you can work at 444 switch the format of the project to RGB and you can choose 1:1 10bit or Dnx444. But little point bumping 4:2:0 footage up to that. You just make bigger files.
