Not sure what your question is?

If you have a 2019 Mac Pro that will run a pre Catalina version OS that would be my choice with either 2019.12 MC or 2020.4 MC

If you can only install Catalina then 2020.4 is for you with some of the limitations as listed in the whats new pdf

    Yes some nice features.
I like the blank panel option to pad the UI layouts.
The bulk edit is great as it includes the option of counters.
Striiping silence from audio is great if you need to rework stems.

  • OK Shane I stand corrected.
It looks like MC won’t export a mixed resolution SAS
My tests showed a timeline with 2 clips 1 dnx 36 and one dnx185x exported SAS (non custom codec) exported as dnx185x
This was not affected by media creation settings.

A forced export as DNX36 or DNX185X took way longer (36 seconds compared to 6 seconds for the SAS export from a DNX185x mixdown)

Exporting SAS non custom codec without a mixdown took the same time as a forced export at custom codec dnx36 or dnx185x

The mixdown time was about 15 seconds. so a mixdown and then a SAS non custom codec is about 2/3 the time of using a custom codec

Just for fun I AMA linked all my outputs back into MC and superimposed over my DNx185X mixdown and couldn’t see any gamma shifts…

  • I’ve dealt with mix codec files in Post before.
Most people aren’t even aware of it because the file wrapper can only describe one codec so it’s the first codec encountered.
I’ll test today because it’s not something I’ve tried to create for a few decades.

  • That’s correct SAS bypasses the QT engine.
As soon as you select custom you enter the QT library and engine and that’s where it can goes wrong.

  • MXF OP1A is fine for export and a good choice. Any software that uses (or Used) the legacy QT for its export was prone to the gamma shift.

DNx36 should be fine for a B&W title (and you would be amazed how much DNx36 makes it to air)

  • The gamma shift issue is a well know historic limitation of the, QT export engine. It doesn’t always happen but its problematic enough that serious post houses just don’t use that route.
Ensuring all you timeline media is at or above your finishing quality.
No DNx36! Then with transcode the entire sequence. Or mix it down to finishing quality then SAS export.

  • If you have a mixed codec timeline and mix down as SAS you will get a file with mixed codes. The metadata of the file will be flagged as the first codec used.
This normally isn’t an issue as most players can switch codec mid playback but not always. So it’s best to mix down or transcode first.
Selecting custom codec and then choosing a DNX codec in the QT option is a real no no due to gamma shift issues.

  • That is correct. The Avid DV codec swapped the field order to resolve the issue in PAL. In non DV projects it makes no difference.

Media info on the Mp4 source file.
My guess is its an unusual audio sample rate. Possibly 32khz
So you may need to externally extract the audio and sample rate convert to 48khz and then use that audio.
