Hmm.. well it’s been working for the last 3 years. So any suggestions on how to convert this h264 footage to ProRes? I read somewhere that Compressor should do it. Would I need to take footage from Capture Scratch folder, import to Compressor, create new folder for ProRes footage, then re-link footage? Or do I need to redo the edit?

I thought that it might be the h264, but I’ve edited many other projects using the h264 format. Even this project was going well till about 2 days ago when it began showing a slight delay during playback.

Thanks for the input! Obviously nothing like taking the time to do it right while shooting. It was a fast production with a fast turnaround so it seems like there isn’t much that can be done without diving into some serious post work. But I think I’ll be looking into this whole uncompressed file thing. I’m new to this and wasn’t aware of compressions and shooting flat, etc..

    thanks again!

ok. can you suggest any links or provide some info on how to “uncompress” h264 .mov files so that I can adjust such details?

    thanks

Hi, yeah sorry i’ve got two 1TB ‘rugged’ drives that I use for video production shoots. I usually keep one at home and take one on shoots, but they are both filling up at this point. I’m looking to get another drive where I can archive all of my raw video files as backup just on case any of these LaCie drives ever crap out on me.

I mostly work off of my macbook.

Looking to see if anyone has any recommendations on what memory drives work best for media and suggestions/insight on backing up video files.

Until now, I’ve never has to worry about this, but I’ve recently been taking on bigger projects that pay, so I don’t want to loose any footage.

    thanks

Hi Michael, I’m glad I’m not the only one with this issue. I’ve been reading up on it and it seems that it has to do with the combination of the H4N and certain microphones. Apparently the H4N’s built-in preamp doesn’t have enough power for some of the newer mics and therefore can only produce so much gain. The best recommendations that I have read have suggested that I use a pre-amp to add some gain to my audio. So essentially the chain would be: mic > preamp > h4n.

There are field sound mixers such as the MixPre-D Compact Field Mixer that already some with a greater pre-amp capability to not need additional boost. But it’s a little pricey for what I need at this moment.

Here’s a link to the one I’m thinking about getting: https://www.cascademicrophones.com/Cascade_Cloud_Microphones_CL-1_CL-2.html

Let me know if you come up with anything better. Otherwise, this is probably what I’ll be using.

Thanks for the help guys. I’m going to check out some of the rental rates from a local photo/video rental store and come up with a reasonable rate.

    thanks!
