I’m not so sure. This is from the Apple document “Late-Breaking News about Final Cut Pro 5″ which was online as part of the 5.04 update documentation:

” Inserting the P2 Card into the PC Card Slot of a PowerBook
The fastest way to get media from a P2 card into Final Cut Pro is through the PC Card
(PCMCIA) slot of a PowerBook. This method requires driver software from Panasonic.
To transfer media from a P2 card using the PC Card slot of a PowerBook:
1 . Make sure the Panasonic driver software is installed on the PowerBook.
For more information, go to https://www.panasonic.com/broadcast.
2 . Insert the P2 card containing the media you want to import into the PowerBook PC
Card slot.
The memory card appears on the desktop as a mounted disk named NO NAME. ”

The URL link in the PDF is a generic Panasonic Broadcast link with no specific related info on that page. A search of the Panasonic site hasn’t yielded anything yet.

You may be right, but I wouldn’t take this as a given. This is a dual-core 64-bit processor. Not the same as an AMD Athlon, for example.

“Plus, the program is fully functional. It can import, export, render effects, even play, it just doesn’t display the moving video. I’m totally convinced this is a software problem and I’ve seen that tons of other people on creative cow are having it.”

Did you check the issue of any overlapping windows? Have you checked on Avid’s own forums? These may be more closely monitored by support staff. E-mail their customer advocate for additional help.

I’m not sure about your specific machine, but Xpress Pro will run on most standard configs. Make sure you don’t have any windows overlapping the Composer window. Are you running dual monitors? If so, have you tried moving the Composer window into the other screen?

Also not sure about your dual-core 64-bit processor. This is definitely not a qualified machine and may not work at all. Avid applications are far more specific and less-forgiving of machine variations than Vegas or Premiere Pro, for example.

PS – I didn’t mean for this to sound snide. Simply that there are several variations to the settings that affect color levels and resizing of imported graphics, so reviewing the manual will make it clear.

This is because depending on your Avid settings, the Avid is doing the conversion for you. This isn’t a given with every NLE. Avid settings can also be selected so that no conversion takes place.

No offense taken on my part. In all fairness, Mark is one of the folks who has made a switch facility-wide from Avid/Unity to FCP/XSAN for many reasons, including cost, but more so for other issues. Places like Mark’s facility are what should really make Avid sit up and listen. This is the sort of enterprise-wide installation (not the one-man-band post shop) that is still Avid’s core (profitable) business. If they are losing on that front, then management needs to definitely re-evaluate the status quo.
