I have re-arranged the room entirely according to my plans. And I’ve just unpacked the JL Cooper Eclipse and I’m learning how to handle it.

I definitely have the best view in town. I need to tidy up some cables. Except for that, I’m really happy with the setup I have now.

I have been grading a short film now and then in between other jobs for a while now. This was graded in my suite on a REC709 monitor. Then yesterday, we set up my Resolve workstation at the cinema across the hall and hooked it up to a Christie CP2220 projector.

Using the RGB to XYZ LUT in Resolve, it was close to what it was on the monitor. Only needed to push things a tad more extreme to get the “cinema version” done.

So yes, to save money.. REC709 -> LUT -> P3

I’ve had varying luck with Samsung F1 drives. At the moment I have Western Digital drives in my little RAID.

Interesting idea. I’ll try that one. Can’t wait for the Eclipse to arrive. Wow… Almost a shame I’m placing the sofa like that. I still have space for another chair next to me, so it’s not a fixed option. I think they might find it more comfy in a sofa. But then again, I’ve never been on “the other side” of a session. 🙂

At the moment I have a bulb emitting 6500 Kelvin behind the monitor, and that’s it. The room is small and painted in a very light grey, so I really don’t need more light than that.

Whether that’s good enough for anyone else, I can’t say. For whatever I’ve graded on the REC709 and brought on to a Christie projector or seen broadcasted, it looks very similar. So I’m very satisfied.

Just read what Joseph said. And that’s what I do most of the time to. I grade a lot alone, and the client comes in to have a look, throw some ideas out there and we test the ideas a little.

I’m sure most of my clients never even thought of color grading before I started doing it. I don’t know anyone else for hundreds of miles who does the same thing, thus they’re so super interested in this, what software I use, and they wanna see what I do on my computer monitor. I don’t like that. It can get a bit uncomfortable having them drooling over my hands as they stretch over me to get a better look at the super cool GUI.

No color wheels here. I guess that’s why it’s a big plus to have a panel with a ring and ball x 3! 🙂
I tend to use the curves a whole lot, but some times, if I need better precision, I use the RGB controls. Click and drag. One at a time.. You know the drill!

Do you use scopes, either externally or in Resolve? If you don’t know – right click on the video image (in the Color page). From the menu that pops up, you have a few choices on what kind of waveforms or scopes you want to see.

I just tried it. Four 4K r3d files in a 1920×1080 timeline, debayering in 1/4. Have no problems viewing them. Playing is.. well.. stuttering of course. 😉
