They already HAVE gotten smacked around a bit by it. The writing’s on the wall, and Avid has seen it and is taking it seriously. Or so I’ve been told by numerous folks I know at Avid.
XPro 6 is coming soon. You might find that it’s a great product, worthy of your project. Otherwise, go with FCP.
Yes, people still use Avid. Avid is still the industry leader. FCP may change that, but not without a fight. Pick the product you feel is best and good luck with your project.
And don’t waste your time with Avid Free DV: it’s not an accurate representation of what the higher-end Avid’s can do.

I forwarded your gripes to Engineering, in hopes they start to clean up some of these problems. You’d think on a 2.x release, a lot of the new bugs and goofiness would start going away. Hopefully they do now.

FluidFilm uses the Fluidmotion rendering algorithm from Avid’s high-end motion effects engine, Timewarp. Fluidmotion also is used in other aspects of Avid’s higher-end effects, including motion-tracking, among others.
FluidFilm–without knowing too many details about it–simply converts interlaced footage to true progressive-frame footage. It’s pretty cool. If that’s all you need to do–convert interlaced footage to progressive, go with Avid and forget the Magic Bullet product.
However, Magic Bullet offers more than conversion. It features all sorts of looks and effects, damage, and other goodies. FluidFilm only includes conversion, no looks. For that, get Magic Bullet Editors AVX.
If you’re happy with Vegas, stick with it…FluidFilm is no reason to switch to Avid just for that in itself. However, since Avid is arguably the best NLE on the market, you should upgrade to XPro if you want the WHOLE AVID PACKAGE and not just a feature or 2. Avid also has better 3rd-party support (plugin effects, etc.) than Vegas, though Avid’s audio editing capabilities are pathetic…PALING in comparison with Vegas.
Just some things to chew on. Good luck with your decision.

Avid products work with the Digidesign Command|8 fader console, plus devices from Cooper and even at one time Yamaha. You’ll have to dig around on Avid’s website for more info. Some Avid products (XPro, Xpress Studio) support the Digi 002 mixer console too, but most of the high-end products don’t. At this time, Avid doesn’t offer support for Mackie or other main-stream control-surface protocols.

You don’t…not in XPro natively. However, if you have Boris, you can create and animate transfer modes in its interface (Boris FX or Boris Red/Avid FX). I think you can also achieve Transfer Modes using some of the Boris Continuum Complete effects, too.
There’s another free plugin out there, called “Transfer AVX.” It was created by Profound Effects (makers of Elastic Gasket and other plugins), and allows you to have Transfer Modes right in your Avid. Since the Cow won’t let me give you the site here directly, go to this thread that I typed up on the Avid Forums for more information on it and where to download it for FREE. Avid’s working on Transfer Modes. Maybe in XPro 6 later this year…if not in 6, hopefully in 7.
