March 12, 2006 at 5:48 am in reply to: Can “Blured Face” effect be done in AVID??

The easiest way to do it is to use Boris Continuum Complete AVX 3 or later (BCC_Witness Protection effect–which has an integrated motion-tracker for tracking the effect to your subject), or get a copy of Boris FX 8 or Red 3 (also called Avid FX). Using these products will give you the end-result you seek easily and right inside your Avid XDV timeline.

If you have a higher-end Avid, such as Media Composer Adrenaline or Symphony, use the “Medien” effect in the Effect Palette (under “Image”) and use the built-in motion-tracker for Symphony, or hand-track it on a frame-by-frame basis in Adrenaline.

If you are simply using XDV and don’t have access to Boris, place a Circle-Wipe effect on your timeline, then nest a blur in the Circle Wipe. (Go to https://www.digitalfilmtools.com and download the “Composite Suite AVX” demo to get a free, fully-functional copy of their “Fast Blur” effect.) Hand “track” the circle-wipe to the subject you wish to blur for desired result.

    Or use AE.

    Good luck.

Got Boris Red? Piece of cake if you do. I’m not sure how to do this in Marquee, as I’ve had similar issues as you when trying to do it. So, I picked up Avid FX and the problem is no more.

If that was supposed to be sarcasm directed at me, you obviously don’t pay attention to changing times, do you? SDI i/o is a cheap solution these days. It’s high-time that Avid gets on board and tries to keep pace with the changing times. Since they have a Media Composer line to protect, they’re going of course going to be slow to do it, but they’re going to have to, or they’re going to lose the bottom-end battles. There are some folks in this world who firmly believe they already have and won’t be able to get it back. We’ll see.

Don’t hijack threads. Start a new one. It looks better for you and usually will get you more help than burying your new question inside an existing thread.

You’re just going to have to wait and see. This has been something users have been asking for…for 2 years. An SDI i/o is something they’ve been asking for since Mojo was released.

Both are great products. However, you’re comparing a software SUITE to a software product…not exactly the most realistic request. Feature for features, both are great products.

    1. You will lose the fact that you can do everything in one piece of software, as the Adobe bundle is made up of numerous pieces of software, whereas Liquid allows you to do everything in one piece of software…in one interface. Liquid allows you to do a lot, but it’s limited in that it’s an all-in-one piece of software, as opposed to being dedicated applications, which offers more power.

    2. You will lose all the incredible power of the various Adobe applications, many of them industry-standard’s (such as Photoshop, After Effects, etc.). You will have to learn these different apps if you want to use them all.

If you want the sheer power of being able to do whatever you want, go with Adobe’s Production Suite. If you want everything in one piece of software, with pre-built (though tweakable and keyframeable) effects and parameters, go with Liquid Pro. Liquid’s cheaper, too. Again, it all depends on your needs/wants.

I’ve heard you can run Premiere Pro 2 and Liquid on the same machine, but I can’t confirm it. Drop Avid or Adobe an email and see if you can get a response with a for-sure answer in it. Otherwise, look for a dealer that sells both Adobe products and Liquid and ask them about it. You might try B&H Photo and Video in NYC to start, or Videoguys (The Electronic Mailbox) in New York State for help. Heck, go to Videoguys’ website: https://www.videoguys.com It’s FILLED with great information, reviews, and much more.

    Take care.

March 4, 2006 at 1:32 am in reply to: New System! PC….or Apple? Which is better?

Why would you waste your money on a G5-based system, with the new Intel-based Mac’s coming out? In less than 6 months, your G5 will be a worthless piece of crap.

Avid’s run best on PC. There’s no way to purchase Mac XPro software at this time, but that’s coming this summer. If you want to cut HD now, buy a PC.

The question of which is better, Mac or PC is a subjective one. Mac cultists swear by Crapple computers (can you tell I’m a PC guy?), whereas PC cultists swear by PC. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Quite frankly, if you base your decision based off of what you’re going to hear on these forums, you’re running on a dangerous path. Find a place that sells both Mac’s and PC’s (easy to find) and demo each one. Better yet, find an Avid reseller to let you see the differences of Avid software on Mac or PC…THEN DECIDE based off of what you have SEEN, not been told.

For what it’s worth, I love PC’s. I think Apple has crippled the Mac line software-wise so much that it’s a dead-end. With this summer’s new Intel-based Mac’s (MacTel’s), that could totally become a different story.

I strongly suggest holding off on your computer purchase until this summer, evaluate the PC’s and Mac’s, then make a decision. By then, the new Mac-versions of Avid HD software will be available and you’ll have a better idea of what to get, since you’ll be able to test drive the software on both platforms.

    Good luck.

February 25, 2006 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Avid Xpress Pro more unstable than FCPro?

NO SOFTWARE is 100% stable! Period. Avid has its bugs, definitely…especially in the XPRo 5-series product, though as of 5.2.3, Avid has a nearly rock-solid piece of software. Don’t be fooled though: FCP is JUST as buggy as Avid. If you do some digging around, you’ll hear lots of FCP users griping about bugs/instability as Avid users. Unfortunately, despite this being the case, Avid gets smeared for its instability while FCP gets praised for being super-software.

No software is perfect. You just pick what you consider to be the lesser of the evils and stick with it.

February 24, 2006 at 12:39 am in reply to: Avid and the Dongle

Last I heard, Avid software looks for the dongle every 2 minutes. In my older XDV 3.5 days, if I’d pull the dongle, it would generally give me an error right away, autosave and shut down. I don’t know if XPro’s the same (it sounds like from the above, it’s not), but it’s always best to have your dongle handy.

February 23, 2006 at 12:44 am in reply to: Cannon XL1

The XL-1 and its later revision, the XL-1s is out of production. The XL-2 or XL-H1 are the 2 “XL-series” cameras on the market now. The GL-2 is a decent camera, but lacks any serious controls to tweak your image.

I love the XL-2. It’s a superb camera. You can’t go wrong with it. The XL-H1 looks AWESOME, but the 24F-mode thingy that Canon came out with (instead of a true 24p shooting mode) looks to be REALLY half-a$$ed. It’s also a bit on the high side, price-wise, in my opinion.

    Take care.
