I dunno. I have not bought CS5 yet, so maybe I don’t meet your criteria; but as far as CS5 ‘killing’ Vegas Pro, I really doubt it.
I have had (and still have) some complaints with Vegas, and so I shopped the options fairly hard: but when I stopped to think about it, I realized that Vegas has pretty much everything I need, either native or in plug-in form, and for a whole lot less than CS5. And it really is very easy to use. And the Vegas COW forum is the best.
I’d like to see lots more native 3D FX, or a Sony-made 3D effects add-on (comparable to After Effects, and/or Boris RED). And I think it is backwards that Sony does not support P2 (because limiting support is not how one dominates an industry); but all in all, at least so far, and perhaps speaking only for myself, I have stopped looking at other NLE’s. The grass just isn’t greener anywhere else.

Hi Mike.
I’m maybe not the best one to talk, because I have been upset about Sony Vegas in the past. And I would also like to see lots more free tutorials, and I do have beefs about Vegas Pro. However, in all fairness, Vegas really does seem to be a fairly powerful and easy-to-use editing solution for what you pay (at least compared to Avid, CS5 and Final Cut Pro). Personally I think Sony is backwards for not supporting P2, and it is sad that Boris RED does not integrate well (and that Sony does not offer more native 3D effects and/or a good chroma keyer), but all in all, given the limited cost of the basic package and the ability to buy quality plug-ins and tutorials if one wants them, it occurred to me that I really should stop complaining.
I know you don’t want to pay, but I am going through the VASST Absolute Training series, and they really pack a lot into it. Volume 9 of their series is all about the Pro-Type Titler. I have not watched it yet, and I am on as tight a budget as anyone, but if it is as good as the first two disks, I am sure I will learn a lot. I hope that helps, somehow.

Scott, may I ask you some questions about this?
Is your main concern the transfer speed over Gigabit Ethernet? Or what (other) factors are you considering/concerned about?

It is not exactly the same, but I have a one-workstation setup, and backup to a Drobo via USB 2.0. I have had no real issues. Twice I had to unplug the Drobo to get it to respond, which was a little scary, but once unplugged and replugged it worked fine.
If I had more workstations I would get the Drobo NAS attachment, and use it without hesitation. However, I am kind of paranoid about data loss, so I would probably also back up finished projects somewhere else, also.

Would it be wrong to over-generalize by saying that Production Assistant is basically for making (repeat) half-hour shows, with the lower thirds and all of that;
whereas Ultimate S provides other tools that may be of interest either in short videos or long movies?Or what different workflows were they designed for?

Hi Laurent. Why do you want to capture it with a 5D? Are you trying to capture more than just the screen? Or if it is screen only (i.e., screencast), have you tried Camtasia?

That’s a great idea. I just wrote to Sony Product Suggestions. I also put Project Properties > Pre-rendered to D:\Temp. We’ll see if that seems to help some. In this case it might not, since C:\ is in RAID 0 (at least for now), but in the future, when C:\ is just a standalone 7200 RPM spin, it should help.

I am running x32, as I do tend to like Sony Noise Reduction, which only runs under x32 right now. I am eager for Sony to re-write Noise Reduction for x64, so I can take full advantage of all of that RAM.

Do you have both C:\ and D:\ in RAID 1?
Also, given the cost of Blu-Ray disks, have you priced the option of backing up to external USB drives, and perhaps taking those to your bank box? I don’t have any attachment to what you do, but when I priced it, it came out way cheaper to back up to external USB.

What I mean is, I can make C:\ a single 1TB 7200 RPM spin drive and back that up to an external USB drive,
