Alan, you may be confusing Affinity Designer with Affinity Photo- which is a brand new app in public beta just released yesterday. Having spent the afternoon with it- I can say it is most definitely the most serious Mac competitor to Photoshop I’ve seen thus far and exceeds it in certain areas.

You have to transcode in order to use proxies no way around that. How long are the clips and what codec? If they are hour+ H.264s, expect a long wait on that hardware.

What’s in the event? That can happen with corrupted media or something heavily processor intensive such as H.264 archives. or media stored across a network drive or shared out to Dropbox.

The iMacs have a built-in H.264 hardware encoder that the Mac Pro lacks. However it is only single pass lower quality encoding. So while it can be faster on the draw it’s not what you want for final outputs.
