Just make 3 separate Project timelines. When you have each as you want, cut and paste all onto one long timeline.

Negative to faking a track based workflow X is a total waste of the applications’ greatest strengths. If you are locked into that mindset you will not have much fun with FCPX. Premiere, Avid, Resolve are all far more straightforward because they are designed for a track based workflow. FCPX is precisely designed against this approach.

Double-click a compound clip to open and add more material into.
What are you trying to do? Compound clips are best for nesting titles, effects or groups of sound effects. They are not very useful for emulating a track-based workflow.

Also copying to a new Project or blowing away renders sometimes clears out that particular issue.

Not shooting any but have heard about it. Greatly prefer ProRes shooting cameras if possible.

Have you reset prefs and deleted the app and reinstalled? That typically clears out this sort of thing.

What sort of 4K material? 4K H.264 from a GoPro or 4K ProRes for example? In either case I’d suggest maxing out the GPU before pulling the trigger on the 12-core. That’s what FCPX uses more. You should always get the most powerful machine you can afford for longevity’s sake, nothing is “too fast.”
