    Bob,

You’re right. I know two Caldigit 5 bay can reach 450MB/s. I own both S2VR HD 2.5TB with PCIe host card and two S2VR DUO 1.0TB. And I use the 5 bay for 10 bit uncompressed HD editing without any problem so far. But I was just curious about if I could do the same thing with two DUO (4 hdd total) striped across together.

Forgot to mention that I have Caldigit HD, 5 bay, and it DOES allow me to capture and edit 10 bit uncompressed 1080i in FCP without any problem.
The datarate I get from this 5 bay enclosure is about 220MB/s, while a pair of their 2 bay is around 290MB/s.

From my experience, numbers you get from benchmark test never guarantee what you can do with the storage.

Actually, I was able to get very good data rate with a pair of CalDigit S2VR Duo connected to an eSATA PCIe HBA. Write and read reach almost close to 300MB/s by striping 4 hard drives together, or striping across two enclosures set to hardware RAID-0.

First time when I saw these numbers, I thought I could save a lot of money by purchasing two 2 bay enclosure instead of 5 bay solution I had installed for my HD editing system. But in spite of it’s 300MB/s read and write performance, It never allow me to run any 10 bit uncompressed footage in FCP timeline.

I don’t use Media Coposer, but FYI, I have changed from Sonnet’s external storage to CalDigit S2VR HD. Both has 5 internal hard drives. I tried to make Sonnet work with the KONA 3, but I realized that couldn’t capture 10 bit 1080i with 5 drives. The data rate I get with the S2VR is about 40 MB/s faster than Sonnet.

Since you are looking for storage for SD, I think Caldigit S2VR Duo which has 2 internal removable HDD is perfect for you. It comes with a host adapter card of your choice, depending on which Mac G5 (earlier with PCI-X, or later PCIe).

How many hard drives inside of your eSATA storage? If 5, you’ll need to add another 5 drives. As far as I know, only CalDigit offers eSATA storage can playback and capture uncompressed 10 bit HD.

I’ve been editing commercials with S2VR HD and Mac Pro, KONA 3 for more than 2 month.

ATTO released v4.0 driver for UL5D to fix this issue about 3 weeks ago. But If you have ATTO fibre-channel controller, you must wail until they update v3.0 driver for Celerity FC host i/f.

I choose Caldigit’s 5 drive RAID. But I think both Caldigit and G-Speed are good. While both of them are using the latest serial ATA HDD, Medea and Ciprico(HUGE) use old PATA drives.

If you intend upgrading to SAN, G-Speed is good choice. But you need to buy expensive fibre channel PCI card like ATTO.

Caldigit comes with PCI host card. So you can get much more capacity at the same budget.

Caldigit has 2 drive SATA RAID and It’s Ideal for 10 bit uncompressed editing with DeckLink Extreme.
And it comes with PCIe host adapter included.
    Check out this movie.
