You can have the exact same issue with FCP7. I work on 7 in a shared environment and have to deal with regular crashes, corrupt project and offline Autosaves a lot. And the moment that footage is moved, and sometimes the assistant doesn’t pay attention, has the flu, can’t be reached and nobody knows where he moved everything? I had a wonderful time dealing with a hysterical client in December (one hour before presentation) because nobody could find the drive where the footage had been backed up in, and the guy who knew was not available…
X is better in managing media and gives you more options. I really like the fact that you can have footage and projects in a library. So everything stays in one package, moving to another drive and connecting to another mac is just a little faster.
The other issues you point are things that you will get used to over time. When I stared out using FCP 10.0.0 I wondered why I had to use a storyline, or compound something, or why the heck is this clip moving up or down into a gap. At first it really did feel like X had to be wrangled into place. But pretty quickly I realised that storylines can be very practical when you need to move b-roll around. Working with clip connections and magnetism in my experience is faster than having to make sure you have everything you need highlighted on a complex timeline before moving stuff around, making sure you don’t delete something when moving or adding clips, and patching your tracks to the right track… Roles are so much nicer.

Take those Movs out of the DCIM folder. This way X will see them as footage and not as a connected camera.Then you should get the import options you need.

In my experience early 2008 MacPro’s do not work well with FCPX. One of my first FCPX clients, the summer it got released, was using a 2008 MacPro and complaining the entire time. I took my 2011 MacBook Pro and blew them away… You really need to use a newer system to work quickly with X, and then you will realized how slow FCP7 really is, especially when importing and rendering.

You must be doing something wrong. When logging footage you can set in and out with the same keystrokes as you do in FCP7 and you can set as many in/out points as you like and turn them into favourties, so you never loose them. In the timeline the in and outs don’t stay put, but its really just a matter of getting used to.

This is the case for any NLE. One should never update in the middle of a Project. But as far as I can tell, all the plugins I use, Magic Bullet Looks, SliceX, and all the FXFactory plugins work perfectly fine with 10.1. It took Resolve only a few weeks to make the new XML compatible.

Its always a good idea to learn other NLEs,especially as a freelance editor. But plugins are important to all NLEs. Most RedGiant plugins, and FXFactory plugins work for FCP7, FCPX, Premiere and AfterFX. Not so sure about Avid since I only edit news on that, but there is plenty out there as well.

You just need to add contrast by color correcting. Bring the blacks down, and lower the mids a little , pull the whites up slightly, for example. You shot everything flat, but still in focus, right? Sharpening is for out of focus shots.

You should post this on the FCPX Techniques Forum, this one is for FCP 7 and older.
I’ve never encountered that problem in X, and I use it a lot. You could delete your render files and trash your settings…

What color is your render status bar? Are all render options checked in the Render Settings?
Even if you have stacks, FCP renders video as one piece not each layer individually(?) Are certain layers playing correctly while others lag?

You need to put the old Event and Project folders back into the old folder structure at the root of your drive. But once you do that you can update again with 10.1.
How did your Library get corrupted? You should he able to restore from the the backup (new feature since 10.1).
I had a crash a few weeks ago that turned my Project into an offline compound, even though everything was online. I simply opened the last backup and dragged the Projects back into my corrupted Event.
