Yeah this really sucks. The same exact card won’t work on a mac because of software? That really is bull.

“After using Motion for a couple years, I now have the impression Motion is more for people with some motion graphics needs (news/corporate/event video editors, for example) than for pro motion designers. And that it’s not a bad thing at all.” Exactly!

This is what I agree with. A lot of the commercials you see on tv have video and then some graphics are sprinkled on top of it. These commercials don’t need advanced motion graphics. For Example a large percentage of car commercials we see on tv. A Commercial Production company could get buy with just Final Cut Studio. No need for after effects.
Again I am comparing Motion to After effects Standard. Obviously if you are comparing a $1000 program with a $300 program there will be major differences. If you compare motion + Shake to After effects then you have an argument. I agree hands down that after effects is king for motion graphics, but if speed is more important that complexity to you then give motion a serious look. Buy one of the Apple Certified Motion training books and give it a few months.

It would be more of a fair fight to compare motion with ae basic version. https://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/matrix.html. Motion $300 AE basic $700. If you need advanced features then ae pro is the winner, but be warned that around 70% of what most motion graphics artists do in ae can be done in motion and faster. Motion is faster, but AE has more features that may come in handy down the road as you perfect your craft. So basically do you use the pro features in AE? If not get a book on motion and you will be impressed.

Hello Chris Smith and Encheval I would also love to have a copy of the custom node script for shake. Do they work for shake 4? The link doesn’t work anymore.
    thanks nikolmann@yahoo.com

  • I was mad at first cause I just bought a dual 2 from craiglist for $1300. but now I see that the Macbook is $2499($2299 edu) and not $1999($1799 edu) for that version. Great motion performance is what is really surprising. Do you think it will be possible to hook up AJA or Black Magic video card somehow thru the ExpressCard/34 slot in the future. Would be nice to just say forget a desktop system. They should have something similiar to the dell laptop docking stations. I think that would be cool.

I think the best way right now is to backup to a large hardrive. 250gb hardrives are less than buying DVCPRO HD tapes. If the stuff you are doing is critical back it up twice. 250gb can give you about 250 minutes. Enough for most projects. 2 500gb drives would be enough for most indie features. In a perfect world the hvx would come with 2 4gb cards. Then tape could finally rest in peace.
