Shane I don’t need a lecture on what monitors are okay for grading. Trust me, my set up is perfect for grading. I sent colour bars from Final Cut Pro to the Dell via DVI and calibrated it to perfection. I tried a set up costing 10 times that and it was no better.
Fact is, there is too much bloody snobbery surrounding grading monitors and set ups. I’ve seen/tried

I am on both sides with this one.
I agree that a PDF is preferable. But only if the ‘searchable’ function works correctly and it doesn’t bring up irrelevant rubbish; which I’ve found it tends to do every now and then.
Being able to sit on the couch with a drink and chill out with the manual for 30 minutes is priceless for me. I sit in front of the bloody computer all day as it is and a paper manual gets me away from all those tiny lights in my face.

I had GOP set to 12, I’ve now put it to 7.
What is recommended for the GOP Stucture setting, it is now defaulting to IBBP in the dropdown with ‘closed’ checked.

Footage is XDCAM HD from 35Mbps high quality HD mode. So Compressor is down-converting to SD.

I know what you mean Alan. One can only assume that XDCAM and HDCAM owners/users are getting all the work and are too busy for forums 😉

Bob, what I’m talking about is very unorthodox. You would NEVER have a reason to open up the disc doors like I’m describing here. Loading a disc into the camera and taking it out again is fine, even in a desert storm with sand everywhere is perfectly okay, same for humid hot rain-forrest type conditions.
I think you could have misunderstood. I’m not talking about the door on the camcorder, I’m talking about the 2 little doors on the actual disc cassette itself; which is the part that you never open anyway.
I’ve even done a test where I opened the disc doors and scratched a disc in loads of places and emptied a vacuumm bag into it, then put it in the dish washer and then dried it in tumble dryer; it worked fine 😉
Look at the 24th picture down in this article I wrote linked below. You’ll see a picture of two discs side-by-side, the left one has the two little doors slightly opened. To do this, you need to release a catch that is inlayed on the side of the disc. This is what I’m talking about.
