I appreciate the thoughtful and detailed advice. I do have a Juiced Link, which is like the Beachtek. I haven’t heard of the Sony EF 44b but it has good reviews on B & H. Would you advise this above the AT899 lav? They both look like they can take battery or phantom power, which is good. It sounds like I should keep the Juiced Link to make sure to get rid of possible hum from the camera, lights etc., to balance the audio, and for better audio monitoring. (The only problem is the connection between the HV20 and Juiced Link is a bit wobbly–maybe I need to look into another adapter)

Some people recommend having a backup boom mic. I have some concern about using a boom indoors because of reflective surfaces etc. — however the NTG-3, NTg-2 and AT897 sounded good on some tests I heard. Any thoughts on these?

Yes, you are right –it is a canonhv20 camera.

When I select capture video, the program does not go to a “video capture format” screen as shown above, but it goes straight to the capture screen with a large blue preview window with a tool bar at the top much like the vegas one.

Yes, I downloaded the legacy driver as you instructed above. But will give it another go, just in case it works today.

No, I have not tried a new firewire; this one is less than a year old and it does work when I capture using HDVsplit. I have used HDVsplit for capturing thus far. (Do you recommend getting a firewire, even if it works to capture with one program?)

No, I can’t capture into Vegas on another computer because this is the only one I have than has firewire capability. (The computer’s only a year old).

Even though I can capture using HDVsplit, I will be using HD camerawork for a video based business and want to use all parts of the program. Hope you guys can still help! You are awesome for troubleshooting with me. Thanks.

I taped in HDV and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 captures HD so there shouldn’t be a problem there. The box for Studio says,”easy import from HDV, AVCHD and DVD camcorders”! HMMM…

These are things I’ve tried in the past 24 hours–
Last night I found on a Windows 7 forum that someone had a similar issue and changed drivers from OHCI 1394 Compliant host driver to OHCI 1394 (Legacy) driver. I did that. Nothing different. (There is also another driver LSI 1394 Compliant Host Controller.)

I tried to playback or capture in DV mode but no capture—still says “preview not available”. I’ve tried a few tricks like start the tape on play. Stop it and then try to capture. No capture there.The capture does recognize the camera as hv20.

To try to set the camera to downconvert(?) the HDV to DV I went to PLAY and on the menu selected “PLAY/OUT SETUP 1″ set the TV type to normal 4:3. Under Camera I set the PLAY/OUT SETUP” to
“COMP OUT” to 480i. I couldn’t capture with this setting either.

I don’t know if there is something I should select in the capture-options-preferences area that would help. I have tried “enable dv device control” checked and unchecked.
Something I just noticed is at the top of the capture window it says
“Sony Video Capture 6.0-Default*.

Any additional comments or help would be appreciated! I need it!

Matt, You rock! The View> Waveforms>Frames worked. This forum is so wonderful. I have inquired in other places and forums without an answer to this. I was hoping there was an easy button to press.

I have never seen the frames/thumbnails since using the program–several months now. I know the program should allow it. I went to options-preferences-video-frames-all. No change — The white rectangle for the video is still there. I also downloaded Jmicron 1394 driver filter from HP, which did not help. I have read somewhere that codecs may be needed. Any ideas on this? I don’t know much about codecs, but really need to be able to see the video and audio on the timeline. Any other ideas I could really use the help.

Sorry, I thought I had responded to this. I am still trying to figure this out. I cannot see thumbnails in the timeline or trimmer, nor have I even seen them. I have been using HDV split to import video with a firewire from a Sony HV20 camera. Then I import the video to project media. The video is showing up as a rectangle white box on my timeline and trimmer. When I try to capture video straight from camera to sony vegas movie studio 10, the capture window ( if that’s what it’s called) says “Preview is turned off”. So it won’t let me capture. Any ideas how to capture in this situation? Maybe not importing straight into Vegas is causing the lack of thumbnails?

Thanks for the response.
No there are no thumbnails of the interview visible in the video and audio strips below the trimmer window–only symbols resembling a film strip as stated before. The two video frame button is activated.
I went to “options- preferences” because your solution sounded like what I need.
I found no area where I could type info in–like activate. This is what I found in preferences “General, Video, Preview Device, VST effects, Display editing, Audio Device, CD settings.” Any further insight or advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Nicole
