Sony Vegas 10-Trimmer
I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. In edititing in the Trimmer window, I am able to view my video. However, in the video and audio sections below the main Trimmer window, a symbol resembling film is seen and in the audio window, a squiggly line indicating audio is seen. How can I preview my video–an interview–play by play in the video and audio sections. Please advise. This would help editing go much faster. Thanks in advance for the help.

I wouldn’t know, I have never used the trimmer. I find it *much* faster to just edit on the timeline.

Do you mean that you do NOT see a video thumbnail strip below the trimmer video preview? If you want to see the video thumbnails, just click the right-most button on the trimmer window (the icon is two video frames) to get the thumbnails back.
You can also “animate” the frames in the thumbnail strip so that they “play” the video as you scrub/select along the trimmer clip. I can’t remember if this is enabled by default, but you can turn it on (at the expense of some editing speed) in the hidden preferences. Shift-Click Preferences on the Options menu, go to the Internal tab, type “animate” in the search box at the bottom, and change the “Animate video frames in trimmer” item to “TRUE”. Be careful fiddling with these hidden preferences – mostly they are hidden for a reason!

Thanks for the response.
No there are no thumbnails of the interview visible in the video and audio strips below the trimmer window–only symbols resembling a film strip as stated before. The two video frame button is activated.
I went to “options- preferences” because your solution sounded like what I need.
I found no area where I could type info in–like activate. This is what I found in preferences “General, Video, Preview Device, VST effects, Display editing, Audio Device, CD settings.” Any further insight or advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Nicole -
Don’t worry about the preferences thing I mentioned – it turns out that it is enabled by default.
I’m not sure why the thumbnails don’t show in the trimmer window… clicking the button I mentioned should switch between showing video thumbnails with audio waveform, or audio only. If Vegas can handle the video at all (and it sounds like it can) then you should get thumbnails…
Do you see thumbnails in video events on the main timeline?
Note that the trimmer only shows 1 video clip at a time, not a sequence of clips like some other editors do. This makes it a bit laborious to rapidly preview and select clips from a load of video, which is probably why folks like Steve just trim clips directly on the timeline.

Sorry, I thought I had responded to this. I am still trying to figure this out. I cannot see thumbnails in the timeline or trimmer, nor have I even seen them. I have been using HDV split to import video with a firewire from a Sony HV20 camera. Then I import the video to project media. The video is showing up as a rectangle white box on my timeline and trimmer. When I try to capture video straight from camera to sony vegas movie studio 10, the capture window ( if that’s what it’s called) says “Preview is turned off”. So it won’t let me capture. Any ideas how to capture in this situation? Maybe not importing straight into Vegas is causing the lack of thumbnails?
