ah, i see he only has 1 channel of VO and 1 of BG.
in that case, i guess panning is ok.

i dont like panning as a solution because if i have stereo clips, i have to un-stereo them,
which is easy to do, and harder to un-do.

it also limits me to 2 outputs only.
i am generally using this function to provide guide tracks to sound teams,
so i need dialogue, effects, and music to be separate.

[Rafael Amador] “You need to pan both channel, one full left and the other full right, otherwise the will mix.

    “

panning is not such good a way to do this.
in general it is much better to establish discrete audio outputs, (in sequence settings, audio outputs tab)
then point each audio track to the desired output.

i think this is what the OP is doing.

“outputs selected as dual Mono. Is this quicktime not being able to split the audio as exported or do I have a setting wrong?”

QT is playing the files as MONO, so they both come out the centre.
QT 10 is pretty useless for most things video editors need, use QT7

in QT 10 you can at least open the info window (Apple i) and see if you have separate mono tracks

in QT7 you can open the Properties window (Apple J)
you should see that there are two mono tracks
you also might be able to un-enable some to listen to them individually

“including not selecting ” Make movie self contained” I cannot see it or hear it when playing”

    weird!
    try self contained.
do a small section as a test
maybe your QT10 is not seeing / accessing the DVCPro codecs.
i havent had to deal with that, so cant advise

  • when i have a text generator open in the viewer and hit space bar (or use JKL), the timeline plays
but are you adding a new text generator every few frames?

ok, guess i don’t know what you meant by Tablature, or exactly how you are working.
is it another video clip you have in the viewer?

i wonder if GANGING is the answer for you.

when you set the Playhead Sync Menu (middle pull-down menu top of Viewer or Canvas) set to Gang viewer and canvas follow each other.

it;s a stop/start thing if you PLAY, but stepping through frame-bt frame, they both move together.

of course going up to the menu to turn GANG on & off all the time would not be efficient.

i use custom key commands (option H to open the customise window)
Control + number pad = for SYNC
Control + number pad “Clear” for OFF

“So, i know there is a hotkey to choose between having the viewer or timeline active, but that doesn’t work for me.”

    in what way?

April 4, 2013 at 11:32 pm in reply to: Lost Media… Can I save this with a render file!?

travis, you definitely should make a COPY of your render scratch onto another drive.

you can easily import the render files and re-name them. (if you want to)
i would definitely keep some indication in the name that it IS a render file,
no point naming it exactly the same as the orignal clip as it is NOT the same!

you just then need to re-edit them into your sequence.

it is generally possible to force a reconnect to anything.
you just need to un-check the “Identical Name & Reel” box in the reconnect window.

you will get warnings that you are not connecting to the right file, of course,
and it may be a good idea to heed them.

that instance of the clip you are attempting to reconnect wont be the only instance of that clip in your project, and reconnecting will create havoc.

i would be vary wary of reconnecting to fix this problem.
either find the render file, make a copy, import it, re-name it, and edit back into your project.

    OR BETTER

export those sections from the timeline,
    back them up,
re-import into FCP, and re-edit into the timeline.

this would be preferable as it involves less work hunting down the correct renders,
also a rendered section in your timeline may be made up of more than one render file,

while you are at it, maybe get another drive and make a backup of all your other media.

  • [Joewi Verhoeven] “most seem to advice export it to EDL but I ran into all kinds of issuesL”

    such as?
hard to help with out more info
still Mark may have guess right, it could well be a reel# issue

[Joewi Verhoeven] “Thanks for in depth answer on my issue, unfortunately I found out too late about naming the footage, now I already have a finished cut but can’t export the EDL”

yeah, well, again, what seems to be the problem? is there a specific error message you get, or what?

if the reel# IS the problem
    Mark gave you a solution,
simply give the clips a reel#, and you will be able to create an EDL.

    here’s one way.
if you don’t have a bunch of clips i the browser,
    or even if you do…

copy paste your sequence into a new project.
go to Tools Menu > Create Master Clips

in the browser, open the master clips bin that will now be three,
maybe sort by reel… no point giving a reel# to a clip that already has one

in the reel column, give one clip with no reel a reel#, anything will do, REEL, or maybe NO-REEL is better.

now select all the clips with no reel#,
right click in the reel column,
and chose the new NO-REEL reel number from the small list of available reel#s that will appear
all clips will now get that as a reel number,

and an EDL should now be possible.

    IF that was the problem…

April 4, 2013 at 7:23 am in reply to: How do I make all of my 16:9 footage into 4:3?

what Ryan said re the 4/3 timeline.

    otherwise…

i make widescreen masks for 16/9 down to 2.35, i’m hoping the same process will work for you.

drop some Matte> Color into in a 16/9 timeline, make i white.
drop a wide screen mask on to it, set it to 4/3.
    (i hope this is possible!)

    export a still image,
bring it into Photoshop, and delete the white, leaving just the black border.

    that’s your mask.

April 2, 2013 at 8:06 pm in reply to: Audio bit rate in FCP / Quicktime

[Joe Violette] ” the FCP 7 sequence I create by importing the clip when choosing to match sequence to clip settings set it to 24bit.”

so what does it say in the FCP browser, or in the clips’ item properties?

April 2, 2013 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Audio bit rate in FCP / Quicktime

where did the file come from?

sounds a bit like you may have exported it from FCP,
    but i’m not sure

    it’s weird behaviour.
i just checked some files in QT Player7 that i knew were 24bit, and it shows them to be 24bit.
one was some location audio, the other was export from my timeline.

why not check in some other apps.

also, can i ask why it needs to be 24 bit to play back correctly?
is it some physical thing with the playback device, or just a quality issue
