do you have access to another system you can work on?
are you able to make the edit,
and send though a project file, or EDL to someone who can duplicate your changes?

the colour picker got broken in Mavericks, i think,

the main parameter you’d want to re-set is DISTORT.
the Basic Motion includes scale, which could be doing you some favours.opening into the viewer needs to be done on a clip by clip basis,
but you can do multiple clips by selecting them in the timeline,
then either hit OPtion Command V
or right click on the clips and chose “Remove Attributes”
select Distortion and hit OKnick

have you bladed the clip into sections?
do you have that part of the clip selected?
if you have in/outs, and then have selected in to out (Option Command A)
you can apply a filter JUST to that selected portion.otherwise, the general solution to a “weird problem” is to trash your preferences.

You can mix n match the bit rates.
