  • Bringing a 4×3 clip into a 16×9 FCP7 Timeline without stretching. How to?

Posted by Ned Miller on November 25, 2016 at 7:50 pm

I’m not much of an editor, I muddle through. I have a timeline for a 16×9 project in FCP7. The client provided me with legacy video in 4×3 and I wanted to add two vertical side bars but it is automatically “stretching” the image to 16×9, and my client looks like he gained 100 pounds. I can’t locate any controls to allow me to keep it at 4×3. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Ned

First, there is a preference you can change that will not scale clips to match the timeline settings. You can find it…

Second, for the clips you may have already added to your timeline: double click the clip to load it into the viewer > click on the Motion tab > click the red X to clear the parameters and return the to their defaults, which will make your video display natively.

the main parameter you’d want to re-set is DISTORT.
the Basic Motion includes scale, which could be doing you some favours.

opening into the viewer needs to be done on a clip by clip basis,
but you can do multiple clips by selecting them in the timeline,
then either hit OPtion Command V
or right click on the clips and chose “Remove Attributes”
    select Distortion and hit OK
