remember to “set Sequences To” the format of your camera original,
or at least a Prores sequence that has he same frame size & pixel aspect.nick

November 27, 2011 at 1:55 am in reply to: Black to white over a very long duration (7-8hours)!no need to nest.
open Matte > Color, make it white.
type in duration in duration field (top left of viewer or canvas),
edit into timeline
add a transition on the head (Park on head, Apple T)
drag it out.work in an Apple Prores 422 timeline at least.
i agree w comments about DVD, i think that’ll be nigh-on impossible with 8-9 hours.
look into file-based playback.nick

sometimes audio renders go haywire in FCP, and render the wrong part of the file.
a fix is to delete your audi renders either manually, by trashing their folder,
or via the Render Manager Tool (Tools Menu)still, you may have to render the audio again, and if it keeps happening to you maybe you should trash your preferences.
do you know that if you up your number of RT audio tracks in User Prefs, you wont need to render audio.

146MB does seem a bit large to me.
Mark and I must have different standards in that department,
and my thinking may well be based on older practices.nevertheless, i think reducing your project file sizes will result in them opening faster,
and your workflow improving.i work mainly in drama & long-form projects.
on narrative dramas i tend to split the work into parts, generally 4 parts.
that maybe tricky for you right now.first thing i would do would be to strip out any redundant sequences.
i like to work with my rushes, plus ONE major sequence, (or set of sequences if i have all parts / spools in one project.)
for older versions, i duplicate and save the PROJECT FILE, not the SEQUENCE.in your case you might create a new project that just stores any older versions that may be clogging up the edit project.
just copy and paste from the edit project into a new project.i like to be able to match back to my rushes bins.
(Shift F wil take you directly from the TIMELINE or viewer to the browser clip)
to do that in FCP you need a functioning “Master / Affiliate relationship between the Browser clips and the Timeline clips.
in FCP you cant do this if your Rushes are in one project, and your Sequences in another.it’s a fragile relationship, and does seem too easy to break in FCP.
if its still working in your project you may want to keep it, so separating your rushes and sequences wont work for you.if you feel you need to break your project into smaller chunks, first try this:
duplicate the projects in the finder,
open them up and delete what you don’t need.
this used to not work, the project would mysteriously remain large,
but as of FPC7 it seems to work.copy / pasting elements from the large project into a fresh project can also work,
BUT copy / pasting collections of bins and sequences at the same time can result in you losing the Master / Affiliate relationship.
again it’s hard to predict if this will happen or not. you could try it and see if it works.RENDERS
flushing out the renders can reduce project file size.
use the Tools Menu > Render Managerall the best,

there’s a trick i use for this sort of thing:
on the track above your video, put a frame of text over the glitch frame
then put 3.23 of slug after that.now copy that and paste 10 times,
copy those 10 and paste another 10
copy those 100 and paste 10 more times,
keep it up till htewhole timeline is covered.now do a find all for “slug” and delete them
find all for text or use track tool to select all text on V2.
hold SHIFT and drag down, cookie-cutting out every glitch frame.
delete the still selected text fames to leave gapsnow park at the head of the timeline,
select all on V1
drag up into the canvas and drop into the Overwrite window.
this will remove all the gaps. (you’ll have to tidy up the end of the timeline a bit)hope that helps,

another approach would be to simply stay a 24fps until you finish your edit / mix / grade, etc.
then change your master to 23.976
this seems simpler to me as you don’t need to mess with your sound to get it to sync.nick

November 20, 2011 at 1:10 am in reply to: multiple drives, multiple sequences + Output to one drive with all media for sequencesyou would use the Media Manager for this.
select a sequence, then FIle Menu Media MAnager (or right click on the sequence and Media Manager)
in MM:
Media Pulldown = Copy
Delete Unused: up to you. you can trim to just the used sections if you tick this
Handles: if you do trim, add some handles: 10fr – 2 secondsBrowse to where you want to media to go
yes, create a new project.if you do this sequence by sequence it will mean waiting for each one to finish before starting the next,
but you will get media for the different projects / sequences in discrete folders.alternately you can copy all 16 sequences into a new project,
then Media Manage all 16 at once.
all media wil be jumbled up together in one foldernick

park at the head of the clip in the timeline
hit f to match frame the clip w in & out points into the viewer
then F10 to edit the clip back into the timeline.if you don’t want the video (like maybe you’ve done some fx work to it already)
then de-activate the video target button.nick
