[Wilfried Van] “Here using HP Z820 workstations with dual xeons ( 2 x 12 cores )”

Whoa… that’s some serious hardware… 24 cores !!!!!… In what circumstances would SVP make use of those cores..?

Does that give you the ability to preview without frame dropping even with FX…?

I’m way back down the scale in comparison to what you obviously do… however on the subject of HP workstaions there are several Z800 configurations I’ve seen at a very reasonable price.

Knowing what you do… if you had to set-up a Z800 for someone who wanted to become proficient with SVP beginning at Pro 12 and had a lower end budget of say 1300 euros (not including monitors) how would you configure it to get the best performance from Vegas… Oh and I’ve also posed the question in relation to a portable system in a laptop…

Ooops…. forgive my lack of understanding… but I was under the impression that if I use the windows 7 ‘snipping tool’ to take a screen grab it resizes to the measurements of the pixels used…?

Right… I’ll use the ‘save screenshot’ in vegas and that should then give you a true representation of the HD frame that I used…

…which btw was 1280 x 720… or would I be better to use a 1080 frame because I’m about to introduce the last 30 seconds of clips which were shot in Dubai at 1080 and my thoughts were to render in 1080 and bring the earlier montage of 720 footage up to the bigger frame rather than downsize the 1080 to fit a 720 frame…?

[John Rofrano] “I wish I could be more help but…….”

…. do you happen to know any ‘pro’ editors on this side of the pond with SVP knowledge who I might be able to speak to directly for some local knowledge when it comes to buying hardware…? It’s a long shot but worth an ask.

BTW… I can configure a laptop with a 4 series i7 quad but it has to have a separate dedicated AMD R7 series or Firepro 5100M.

What do I lose out if I chose a dedicated GPU over a discrete…?

Thanks for replying John….My immediate questions for you are:

    1. What is the model of your Mac Book Pro and have you tweaked it…?

    2. Does running windows 7 on the Mac Book Pro compromise SVP in any way detrimentally…?

    3. The most powerful (clock speed) i7 4th gen processor for a laptop I can find is the 4910MQ… would you agree the 4900 series are the top of the tree..?

    4. Why discrete graphics chip…? I cannot find an Intel i7 4 series processor with an AMD discrete chip such as

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-8690M.86339.0.html.

    does one exist…?

[John Rofrano] “FCP X doesn’t have tracks so it takes a different approach called the magnetic timeline…”

Interesting…. some weekend homework research for me… 🙂

Quick question John : do you use a VM to run windows on your Mac..? I read somewhere that it performs better on a Mac inside a VM…?

[John Rofrano] “I bought a 12-Core Mac Pro primarily to use Final Cut Pro X. I also run Vegas Pro on it but that’s not why I bought it. I’m creating training for Boris TV with Final Cut Pro X “

Knowing what you do and having now spent some time researching Apple hardware it brought me to that conclusion John… 🙂

As I now realise, the FCP X NLE is of course written for Apple hardware, so naturally it makes sense that it will make more efficient use of a 12 core machine and work in unison. I believe it’s the only NLE software that also has it’s own hardware…? Begs the question why Sony don’t either build a machine for Vegas Pro to obtain ultimate efficiency or write a version of their program that makes efficient use of the hardware it’s running on.

Perhaps a program module within Vegas that scans the system it’s installed on and then implements the appropriate algorithms to ensure it works at maximum efficiency…? Not that I’m in any way a programmer and have no idea if that could even work, but it seems logical to me.

I think once I get my Mac pro of choice, I will most certainly be installing FCP X and trying out 2 identical projects to discover if in fact it works better for me than Vegas.

    cheers

    [Norman Black] “In summary:
So without GPU support enabled Vegas will use cores but best playback edit performance will come with GPU enabled and a good GPU.

You always want fast individual cores since the Vegas decode is single threaded.

For max encode performance you want more CPU cores. You still want a good GPU for the effects/composite engine but extra cores should help encoding/compressing part. Remember that each encoder is distinct and some will scale better than others with more cores”

Many thanks for taking the time to answer Norman… plenty for me to try and also digest with the core of your reply.

[Norman Black] “I encode using frameserving to ffmpeg/x264. Faster than the Vegas AVC encoders and better quality”

I will certainly keep this in mind… better quality is surely always desirable especially if it comes with an even faster encoding process.

    cheers

Oh… that’s odd… on my window there is a large photo placed between the text.

I click on the link to upload a non-resized screen grab from my desktop (made with the ‘snipping tool’ ) and then copy the embed code to the message so when I post it appears as described, but you say it’s coming up really small when you open the thread…???

I got it running as it should… turns out it wasn’t your suggestion… but rather my inexperience at ensuring the project properties PAR matched the change to Square pixels in the clip properties.

Somehow the project properties changed from my initial settings to match those of the clip when I brought it into the new project… (???)

Anyways… now I’ve been able to use it I don’t really get the benefit I’m looking for… I’d hoped the UpRez would take care of the aliasing you can see in this screen grab which doesn’t change at all with any of the quality menu choices even cranked all the way up to 100 on the slider scale.

This is from the timeline preview window (no zoom on the clip)

So… I’m obviously looking for a way to get this clip to look at least as good as it does originally but inside my HD project.

    Is there a way…?

It’s only 3 seconds long but stands out from the rest big time… well it does to me…lol

I’m having a weird issue with UpRes.

I follow your tutorial step by step… and as we’ve established I can only select 1.42 PAR from the UpRes source menu.

Then I go to the Transform tab and change the ‘X’ with a view to having the video expand just far enough to fill the frame, but it stops short of the frame width leaving very thin black stripes on either side

    Any ideas please…?

    Source is 720 x 576 x 32 MPEG-2
PAR of 1.4568 (PAL DV Widescreen)
