It’s quite bizarre. Vegas detects it as PAL. When I change clip’s property to PAL and set “maintain aspect ratio” in pan&crop to NO, then dimensions looks right. Is it ok to continue with editing as long as it looks right, no matter how I got it working?

This way, although the dimensions look right, image looks very flat, very dull, as if I’m viewing it behind a brown screen door. I’m sure that camera is capable of better picture. I am wondering if color space is interpreted correctly?

I don’t know the videographer who shot this. He is a friend of a friend of a …, so it is not easy to get more info.

Hi Mike, I already installed Matrox codecs but they didn’t work. Then I installed latest QT Lite and now it plays back in Vegas. However pixel aspect ratio is not fixed. What I view is 702×480. I tried different project properties with no help. How can I fix it?

Thanks Mike. I just received some details about the footage:

Canon xh-a1
format – ntsc 23.97 f/s
advance pull down 2:3:3:2

DVCPRO is Panasonic format as far as I know. Do you think it’s wrong detection or could Canon possibly be using this format? It’s kind of confusing.

Thanks John. I’ll do a clean install of OS and video software.

While on the subject of codecs, how do you manage your codecs?

I mean:

how do you make your system to use one codec over another when playing or editing a certain video format?

and how can I know what formats of video a codec can play/edit?

I come from audio production. This codec thing in video looks very messy to me. I’d like get a grab of the fundamentals of their working.

I uninstalled vegas, restarted the computer and reinstalled vegas again, that seemed to solve the problem.

However, I do have K-lite and Media Player codec packs installed. Should I uninstall them?
