What’s this video format and what codec do I need?
Hi,
I’m new to Vegas. I have a footage that I am trying to import into Vegas but I couldn’t quite figure out what the format of the video is.
Below I’m pasting the info from MediaInfo and MPEG Streamclip respectively.
Could you help me figure out the format and what codec I need to install to import this footage in Vegas timeline? and how can I fix non-square pixel aspect ratio?

As MediaInfo said, the codec is DVCPRO which Vegas doesn’t natively support.
You can download the Matrox VFW Software Codecs which include DVCPRO from https://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/version1.0/.
Install this and you should be OK.
Be sure to set a Restore point before installation just in case something goes wrong. -
Thanks Mike. I just received some details about the footage:
Canon xh-a1
format – ntsc 23.97 f/s
advance pull down 2:3:3:2DVCPRO is Panasonic format as far as I know. Do you think it’s wrong detection or could Canon possibly be using this format? It’s kind of confusing.

Nick, in that case, forget about downloading the Matrox codec as that camera shoots DV or HDV which Vegas should recognize.
I seem to recall from reading here and elsewhere that some users have experienced problems with footage from that camera so a search on it on this and other Vegas forums would be your best bet. -
Hi Mike, I already installed Matrox codecs but they didn’t work. Then I installed latest QT Lite and now it plays back in Vegas. However pixel aspect ratio is not fixed. What I view is 702×480. I tried different project properties with no help. How can I fix it?

Nick, what puzzles me is that MediaInfo said that the the width was 704 pixels but the original width was 720 pixels.
Did someone else do the capture of this footage?
Do you know what software they used?
Have you tried setting your project properties to DV widescreen mode (1.2121) and then using Pan/Crop to “match output aspect”? -
It’s quite bizarre. Vegas detects it as PAL. When I change clip’s property to PAL and set “maintain aspect ratio” in pan&crop to NO, then dimensions looks right. Is it ok to continue with editing as long as it looks right, no matter how I got it working?
This way, although the dimensions look right, image looks very flat, very dull, as if I’m viewing it behind a brown screen door. I’m sure that camera is capable of better picture. I am wondering if color space is interpreted correctly?
I don’t know the videographer who shot this. He is a friend of a friend of a …, so it is not easy to get more info.

PAL is a completely different color system (as well as frame size and rate) than NTSC so this doesn’t surprise me.
Can you post a small clip (30 sec. or so) onto DropBox, send me the link and I’ll take a look at it on my machine to see if I can figure out what’s going on.
