I’m beginning to think it’s compression artifacts. Took the camera out again today, white balanced properly, full sunlight, all the settings as mentioned above (no detail, ND Filter), but shot on 1080p. It looks horrible, barely useable (perhaps not useable). Here’s another upload:

You can see the grain all over the place. If 1080 is the problem, then 1080 is unusable…what’s the point of having a 1080 setting?

The same grain for shots taken indoors, in less light…

I’m in Morocco at the moment. If the camera is at fault, then I can go to a JVC when we get to Barcelona. That won’t give me two weeks of this project back, though.

Jeffrey, thank you. About the grainy look — regardless of what setting I put the camera on (1080 or 720, 30fps, 24fps), and I always get noise. Looking around online, I get the following advice:

use an ND filter when in sunlight
turn the detail to -5 (or all the way down to off)
shoot in 720 instead of 1080

And so on. But I’ve tried a lot of settings (perhaps not specifically these), and I can’t eradicate the noise. This is the first clip I took with it:

Ignore the white balance issue for a second… is that normal grain for a sunny day?

    Thanks again,

Okay, forget what I wrote above, I’ll rephrase the important question here:

Is there a way of plugging in a mic to channel 1 of the hm100, but having the movie this records play sound in both ears? And if not, what’s the quickest way of converting it to a movie that does?

    Thanks 🙂

Actually, thank you both for the help. And Rafael, I checked out your site – those are some beautiful videos. Nice time lapse!

    Ha. Oh the irony.

Thanks, moving it back into the Apps folder worked. So, after a week of not being able to use it, about 10 hours of trying to fix it, and $80, I find out all I had to do was move it into the App folder.

    Damn!

Thanks Tom, you just ruined my day with the right answer! 🙂

I have a post in moderation because I referenced an evil alternative forum that has both DV and info in the title? Weird.

Anyhoo, here are the words from it:

    OP:
Thanks Robert. The link takes me to the same page and the same response once I enter my FCP serial number. It just says that it is invalid.

I have finally sorted the problem by spending 89 dollars on Calibrated{Q} software which loads the XDCAM EX codec into Quicktime.

But it is a pity that a legit serial number should not work on the FCP update download site.

Searching the web produced many more such horror stories including one where one guy downloaded the update only to have a message on his machine that it needs 6.0.5 to update. (he reverted to 6.0.0) like me on this machine.

Maybe somebody from Apple knows why legit serial numbers for FCP (from a box, installed de novo) show up as invalid on their website?

    REPLY:
Apple and other software publishers release serial numbers that are country/region specific. It could be that since you purchased your software package in another country than where you are now that during the update process the standard web-based interrogation that goes on in the background that Software Update recognizes you’re not in the same country as where the software was purchased and therefore locks you out from updates.

That’s the only thing that makes sense for your situation.

I found a possible problem: I’ve changed country (now living in England, but am on the road for the next ten months, and am currently in Lisbon. The last post on this post seems to think it’s a problem.

And if Software update says my computer is up to date?

    Erm,….

Second question — I can’t seem to work out how to update my FCP 6.0 to FCP 6.0.6. I just took another look at it, and it isn’t the academic version.

But now I can’t find updates to 6.0.6 from 6.0. Anyone know the link? 🙂
