As to DV codec question, doing all your titles and graphics in 10 bit space will look much better. With layering of DV clips it is far nicer if these are then rendered to 10 bit than recrushed down to 5-1 DV compression.

May 19, 2005 at 11:00 pm in reply to: Online Edit for Mini-DV Short film: Options for Finishing/Mastering?Okay this is what I did with a documentary for ABCTV here in Australia and you can follow the same process and save yourself $. The footage was captured via firewire like you and cut in FCP. I then media managed the footage down to a Firewire HD and carried this to https://www.digitalpictures.com.au who had just set up a FCP online system. They wanted me to use thier Symphony and redigitise it all etc from EDL but I had no interest in this. I took in the HD they copied the files across to their large SCSI raid, opened my project then selected the timeline to be 10 Bit Uncompressed and this then uprezzed all my footage and made titles, compositing at full resolution. This process took about an hour or so (1/2 hour doco. Then we checked the footage by playing the timeline, watched the external scopes etc. Then mastered to Digibeta. The digibeta was then taken across to their DaVinci suite for a beautiful colour grade. Saved heaps of $ and it looked great. The online company was crying at the fact they didn’t get a day or so out of me for online charges (deck hire plus suite charges). How much would this have cost taking an EDL into Symphony and redigesting about 40 tapes – heaps.
Ask here or look for a place in your local area with FCP online, digibeta and whatever else you need. Heck google. I went to one of the biggest post houses in Australia and it went smooth and was master was tech checked. Going into DaVinci was expensive but worth it.

What I do is – select the timeline you want to export from FCP, go to export choose Compressor then select – 60 minutes best, All, then select where you want the audio and Video file to go Suggest start a new folder to put them both into, then go to next column and and make the file names shorter but leave the tags.
Then let compressor do its thing. Go to sleep for the night.
Wake up check the files. About one and a half gigs. Then open DVD studio pro and import them.
A couple of reasons. DVD studio pro and Compressor use the same engine so the files will look the same. therefore you are wasting you time exporting the QT movie (one extra step) and then converting to Mpeg2 also one less loss of quality. Also you dont have the large redundant QT file.
Another reason is that in FCP if you double click n on the timeline you can create a frame accurate marker (select marker and name) whereas in DVD studio you can’t do frame accurate due to GOP and nature of MPEG2.
If you export from FCP to compressor – it will be a very fast process in DVD studio as the program does not have to spend hours changing the QT to Mpeg. It’s be done.

Make your choice from these three. The best is by Rabige a standard for film schools, but doesn’t have producing info.

There’s also a program called cinematize that works very well. Can convert to DV or DVC50 or even uncompressed.

April 27, 2005 at 10:03 am in reply to: slow start ups, sluggish performance..what to do?In 10.3 a good thing to do is Startup the computer whilst holding down the SHIFT key. You’ll see eventually on screen it saying starting up in Safe boot mode. Then go and run Disk Utility and Repair Permission on your startup disk. Do this every 2 weeks and you’ll have a happy mac. Why don’t you download the free DV application from Avids site then you can relearn the editing process. It works for dv only and is perfect for learning kepyboard shortcuts etc. Start here, then buy later if need be. You can’t map the keyboard but everything else is the same.

You can do the chapters in FCP3. They are more accurate if done in FCP than the iDVD or Studio Pro. So on your timeline where you want to put chapters. Click twice on the M. Then select chapters on the popup window and give it a name. Move to next spot on timeline and doubleclick M. Then when you export it as a quicktime movie make sure to select the pull down menu Markers and select Chapters. Name the movie and export. There are very good articles for this at https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_homepage_index.html an FCP essential site.
good luck
