A lot of people made fun of “Open iMovie Project” in FCPX, but this is exactly why it’s there. If you use that feature in X you can open it and have it automatically link to the source media.

Just to add onto what Bill said, FCPX is generally much better than 7 in this regard. The one exception being that it will move the entire clip of anything that is in the project, and won’t trim with handles like 7.

Make sure when you move/duplicate the project to the new drive that you select to move the event or clips used in it. Events house your footage, projects house your edits, you need both in order to work off of a different machine.

Also, with anybody coming into FCPX from 7, do some training on it real quick. A lot of people just jump right in, get confused, and then complain about how it can’t do a bunch of stuff that it actually can do. This is a major part of where all the misinformation about FCPX originates.

Checked out your website, pretty cool. I’ve always wanted to learn harmonica, might have to subscribe at some point.

I’m really happy with both sites in all honesty. They’re fundamentally very different though. As a subscriber I haven’t been super happy with Lynda’s courses lately, as they’ve been really busy updating all of their Adobe training to CC. Things like Logic Pro X aren’t getting the attention that they deserve. They did have a day one “new features” course on Logic X, but that’s it. As a subscription service you really hope that new courses will be added that are in your interest so that it’s worthwhile.

With RippleTraining, I can take or leave what I want. Without the subscription fees I don’t mind if their courses aren’t in my zone of interests. Their training also feels more in depth, with Lynda courses I feel like I’m watching a bare bones demonstration of techniques, with Ripple it seems to be more like a proper in-depth tutorial on every function they cover.

Avid has killed support for OMF within Pro Tools. They recommend using an AAF instead, which is honestly a much better format. I switched to the greener pastures of FCPX a year and a half ago, so I use X2Pro for all of my AAF generation, but back in my FCP7 days I’d use Automatic Duck. Check them out, they’ve got you covered.

Very happy about this, guess the Mac Pro update will in fact be 10.1. I hope this “Fixes several issues related to interlaced media and retimed segments which could cause exports to fails” fix will cure the -50 export errors that seem far too common.

I really like them both. I’d say Lynda.com is better for general training, and has an pretty good color correction course. Ripple Training has much more advanced and focused courses that are useful once you’ve got a very good grasp of the application.

Your clips wouldn’t sync if they were already conformed. I’d recommend creating a test multicam, place sample cuts to each angle, then select it and hit conform speed in the timeline. I know multicam works with different framerates, and I think once you get the cuts you should be able to conform (Which would knock the one clip out of sync). Never tried this, but think it should work.

X2Pro does a wonderful job. Used it to take my last short into ProTools and it was spot on.

I’d try Lock & Load X. It’s amazing stabilization and you could test the footage with the trial version to see if it works. It’s 100% worth the money.
