Do you have jam synced timecode? If so, you should look into Sync-N-Link X ($199). This will knock out your duties in no time at all.

Also, media management and organization is extremely critical in FCPX. Make sure you spend your spare time prepping by learning as much as your can about these topics in FCPX. Luckily, Premiere has borrowed many of FCPX’s ideas on this, so think of Smart Collections as Search Bins, but subjects like Keywording vs. Bins are very important to have a solid grasp on. It’s not particularly difficult, honestly it’s much easier than in FCP7, Ppro, or Avid, but it is very different.

There are countless great courses on the subject, but my recommendation would be to check out RippleTraining.com or Lynda.com.

Keep an eye out for Boris Continuum Complete 10 when that comes out for FxPlug. I’ve been using the new Beauty Studio plugin in the other hosts and it’s very nice. It’s pricey, and might not be economic if all you want is beauty work, but it’s a great package to have as a whole, and brings Motion much closer to After Effects in terms of plugins.

Thanks to both of you for the recommendations. I think the idea I’m working on right now might solve it. I’m exporting the original frame and tracking it in with Mocha Pro. This will let me fade it out over a few frames and hopefully give it a natural look. The guy and girl are matched to the point where you can’t see an adjustment on them, just the background. It won’t be perfect, but hopefully I can draw it out over a few more frames.

I will be there, and I’m excited to hear what they have to say. I really love the push Apple has been making to get the word out there about FCPX’s role in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

I’ve been fighting with getting 3D tracking into Motion, and SynthEyes is currently the way to go. At the moment Mocha Pro (which I’m a huge fan of) only supports limited shapes and corner pins, about 1/4 of the output available to AE.

September 26, 2015 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Ultra-wide and curved monitors

I use the 34″ ultra wide in conjunction with the DC 4K (also from LG). It works beautifully to set the viewer on the 4k with the timeline and event browser on the main. Before this setup I had the ultra wide with a 23″ Pro Cinema (silver matte one) and I’d keep the events on the 23″ which worked really well. One piece of advice though, get the curved ultra wide. Clients love to nerd out on it when they come in for sessions 🙂

September 26, 2015 at 4:55 pm in reply to: Apply Chroma Key at a specific area – Final Cut

What you want to do is use a thing called a garbage matte. If you’re on a version before 10.2 you should duplicate the clip and apply a mask on the top layer. this would also be the layer that you use the key on. If you’re on 10.2+ you can just click the shape button in the upper right of the effect in your inspector. This will allow you to add a shape mask that will restrict the key to it’s bounds. If the shot has movement than you can animate it with keyframes. If this is a common task for you than you should consider using SliceX/TrackX/DriveX (specifically SliceX or TrackX for this task). It offers tracking capabilities that can automate the animation of your mask.

September 3, 2015 at 6:06 pm in reply to: iPad Pro?

I’m personally hoping for something akin to Logic Pro X’s Logic Remote. To me that makes infinitely more sense than a full on native iPad client. Honestly, Logic Remote is the biggest reason that I want an iPad Pro. I constantly use it on my iPad Air and would love to have a bigger screen. So far as FCPX is concerned, I think there are a number of use ways to incorporate the iPad. You could of course use it for trimming and timeline activities, but it could also be a full screen Inspector, or show the scopes, quick access to Keywords, event browsing, touch based OSC, etc. Ooh… I’ve got it. They should include a keyframe graph so we can actually adjust the interpolation and values for any of our keyframes (akin to Resolve’s keyframe editor, which is heavily based on FCPX’s to begin with). The possibilities are endless.

June 2, 2015 at 5:59 pm in reply to: FCPX Certification a SCAM

I don’t personally feel that their prerequisites are necessarily off. It does seem that the instructor probably should have said something along the lines of “Make sure you study that book we gave you, this is a difficult test”. I went into the Logic exam with practically no experience in it, but our instructor mentioned several times that if we wanted to have any hope of passing, we needed to study and practice with the book. I studied like hell, and at the end of the three days I passed the exam. It’s entirely possible to pass after just three days, so long as you study nonstop for those three days. It’s not fun, but it is possible.

I believe they got rid of the shortcut questions at the 10.1 exam and beyond. When I took that one the instructor mentioned how they got rid of them because Apple felt you shouldn’t be punished for customizing your keyboard. I remember a lot of them on the Level 1 & 2 exams, as well as Motion 5. I don’t think the current FCPX or Logic Pro X exams have any of them.
