  • Apply Chroma Key at a specific area – Final Cut

Posted by Kurt Protrek on September 26, 2015 at 3:33 pm

    Hi,

I am trying to apply the chroma key to a specific area in my screen.

The center of the scene has a fake TV with a green screen and around it more objects with green. When I apply the Keying on the scene I loose my green from everything. I would like only to apply it at a specific area, the fake TV. Is that possible?

What you want to do is use a thing called a garbage matte. If you’re on a version before 10.2 you should duplicate the clip and apply a mask on the top layer. this would also be the layer that you use the key on. If you’re on 10.2+ you can just click the shape button in the upper right of the effect in your inspector. This will allow you to add a shape mask that will restrict the key to it’s bounds. If the shot has movement than you can animate it with keyframes. If this is a common task for you than you should consider using SliceX/TrackX/DriveX (specifically SliceX or TrackX for this task). It offers tracking capabilities that can automate the animation of your mask.

For something like a TV it’s often easier to just use a corner pin distort and forget about the green screen altogether unless something passes in front of the TV.

I’m with Brent on this one, but also want to point out trackers exist in Apple Motion and work okay.

The new slice x, track x, drive x bundle from core melt is amazing.

No doubt. I can’t yet afford those, but there is *some* of the same functionality in Motion. Not all, but”some”.

Hi Nicholas, thanks a lot for you replying. But I am still confused on how to do it. I have been trying to insert the mask, but it does not work.

I can add the mask on the “Color Correction”, but it does not let me to do it at Keying effect.

If I go to the mask effect and insert it, and insert the keyer. The keyer will still apply over the whole scene.

I have tried a lot of possibilities.

    thanks!

Is there anything that passes in front of the TV?

    Yes, hands and heads. 🙂

Then as Nicholas mentions, crop the picture and put a full instance of the clip behind it without the key.

The top layer will look like this:

and the bottom layer will be the full image

I have tried to do it, but there is still a problem. The green from the full image still appears when the video is not in 16:9 configuration:

Note that I have inserted the TV video between the cropped image and the full image:
