Are your clips and sequences both uncompressed? Or are you using a compressed clip in an uncompressed sequence?

Any system and FCP version specs you can provide would be useful. FCP used to have such wierdnesses in older versions.

I am in Mumbai, and work with or have worked with most of the post houses out here. But I haven’t come across this company. Possibly because they seem to have a rather deeper print background.

We have a busy movie industry here. As well as VFX animation CGI etc. I spend most of my waking hours in a large post house servicing clients here – DI, VFX etc. And TV commercials post as well.

We also have a company in London which does the overseas work that we snag. In fact, we actually ‘reverse outsource’ work from here to London. That’s why I got interested in knowing how your experience was in this direction.

10 sec exports work fine you say. I think this is because of the 2 GB or 4 GB limit to file size on Windows FAT32 drives.

Does it work with iMovie? If it does, you can use those imports in FCP too. I think they get imported as Apple Intermediate Codec.

I guess you mean you take, say, 60fps clips and slow them to 24 using compressor by making the source play slow? Some thing like that? CinemaTools can also achieve that.

Can you explain your method?

Seems to be a typo here. GigE will not support even one stream of uncompressed HD, but may support more than one or two compressed HD streams. Or maybe you mean SD not HD.

I’m intrigued by this problem, as I’ve seen it too…

To summarize…

PSD Creating system
MacBook running Leopard.
CS3 Photoshop
Layered PSD file with Max Compatibility

PSD Receiving system
Mac 8 core and Snow Leopard
FCP is 6.0.6
Photoshop NOT installed

The file is a simple, two layered RGB file
Not a Windows PSD thing, both are Mac
Not CMYK
Not 16bit

Same PSD opens in other systems – Intel MBP, 2.33 MBP, 3G MacPro etc
and in FCP 4.5 system on older G5

I tried this test.psd on
MBP 2.33 w OSX 10.5.8, FCP 6.0.6, QT 7.6.4
MacPro 4-core 2.66 w OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.6, QT 7.6.4
Both don’t have Photoshop installed
Both open your test.psd fine and with layers.

But in both these systems I’ve seen Photoshop layer issues in the past.

So may be something about your installation. In the two machines I tested on, the MBP is an old installation and continuously updated via Software Update. So its ‘unclean’.
My MacPro recently had 10.5.7 issues so very recently I did a complete clean install – OS, FCP everything.

If you ever solve this, please let us know.

One workaround if the number of layers isn’t too many is to make multiple copies of the Photoshop file and in each keep only one layer. Now save each as a TGA with alpha. Then import all into FCP and use them as layers.

Also, I just checked, Pixelmator made Photoshop files also import as one layer only (FCP 6.0.6)

So something seems broken with Photoshop and FCP. I don’t know about FCP 7, though.

I’ve seen the exact same problem too. In general it happens with Windows created PSDs… hang on, I HAVE read your post carefully.

But I’ve noticed that of late its happening on Mac saved PSDs as well. In fact it happens even in Photoshop on the same system as FCP.

I had solved it some time ago, but can’t recall exactly how. As a hint, there’s something about ‘Maximise compatibility’ when saving in Photoshop. I think that has something to do with this.

Although this is not a solution, I’ve completely switched to Pixelmator instead of Photoshop. Haven’t tested it lately, but Pixelmator Photoshop files seemed to behave in FCP as far as I remember.
