A slight variation.
Borrow a MacBook Pro from someone. It had Thunderbolt and GigE.
Network that to your PC.
Copy all data to an equal number of eSATA or SAS RAIDs or drives in your PC.
Budget about 5 hours per TB for the copy process over GigE (at 60 MB/sec)

Hang on. You cannot add external GPUs to a MacPro over Thunderbolt with the Sonnet PCIe extender. You can a large variety of cards for sound, storage, video capture but not GPUs. Not under MacOSX anyway.

A am at IBC and there’s one table with one of the founders of Eyeon demoing the Windows version of Fusion. I asked one BM rep, and he said they would continue the product as it complements Resolve. On Windows at least. On a Mac version he could not commit if that was even planned.

My bets are for an all inclusive Fusion for Mac and Windows for $500 and node based compositing features within Resolve. By NAB.

Sort of like the Terranex take-over. Keep product alive, bundle all features, lower price, integrate some features in existing products, sell volumes. Apple has done it over and over. Now, BM.

This is the only success formula in the post world. $ 10,000 anything, in software is over.

I’m doing something like this in a theatre which I helped set up with a DCP server and projector. We invite people to view their work-in progress edits here. But we manage by insisting that they get ProRes files. Which in almost any NLE are easy to export. People export them for sound ref anyway.

But, in my experience, finding a player which can play all of the formats you mention out through SDI is probably not possible. If you do find such a player, then let me know.

About the sound, as suggested, you need to consider de-embedding it from the SDI or HDMI. Picture off SDI/HDMI and sound off the sound card may introduce sync issues particularly on longer sequences.

As an aside, consider using FCP 7 as a ‘playback engine’.

Does this account for the fact that each purchase is good for install on 5 machines with the same App Store account, I wonder? For instance I bought one for my ‘home use’. And its running on my MBP, my iMac and my MBA. So is this 1 out of the 1 million above, or 3 out of the 1 million above.

Does it really matter? Maybe it does, because I use all three regularly (several times a week), but only I use them, and never simultaneously.

LTO-6 for long term definitely.
But if you must have the data more accessible, then getting one of those 4-bay or 5-bay enclosures with tool-free or tray less drive install, and which can do JBOD is a good choice. You can place 5 bare drives in it, all connected via USB3. And simply power it once a day to keep the drives spinning and healthy.

Populating DNxHD files in a bin by dragging the .mdb file to a bin, while convenient, is defective. You will likely lose the Tape name information. In a small project with some tens of clips that won’t be much of an issue, but as the number of clips exceed thousands, the likelihood of repeated clip names goes up. And once that happens some ambiguities are introduced. Hence, reel name becomes important.

Importing through the media tool or via a log is recommended.
