March 26, 2012 at 11:24 am in reply to: Whats the diffs between FIELD DOMINANCE & FIELD PRIORITY ?I am not too sure if technically there is a differnece in the way the terms are used generally however I think I saw a post where Dave LaRonde used them as slightly different terms. (but cant find it just now to reference)
They both seem to be used in terms of describing field order in an interlaced image.
I have worked in broadcast tv for over 20 years in the UK and have never heard the term field priority used except seeing it here a few times. It may of course be a UK/US language thing.
Indeed I just “Googled” field priority and the first page of results are not TV related at all.
The first thing to appear using the term in Google is on page two, a COW question on field issues then another couple of pages of non tv related entries. I did not look much past that. So maybe its a term that was coined here ?Obviously if you “Google” field dominance then you immediatly get pages of tv related content.
Which is a pretty long winded way of posting “I dont quite know” however it seems that field priority is not a widely used term – at least not indicated by a simple Google search.
Perhaps others know different.

You may have a fundamental problem trying to key material that has been originated on DVCam.
Both DV and DVCam use 4:1:1 chroma subsampling and although DVcam usually has s slightly better picture quality than DV, as the cameras and lenses are a little better quality the 4:1:1 signal makes keying poor.
Recapturing from the original may help a little but broadly there is not enough colour information to provide a clean key with that format.best wishes

[Craig Hirshberg] “Overall, what are your experiences with AJA Kona and Avid Media Composer 6”
I use a Kona 3 card and have been quite a bit of testing with Avid V6.01
I have found it to work very well, I am used to using Nitris DX Avid hardware so I know what it performs like with Avids own boxes.
The Kona feels preety smooth – the timeline moves fast and easily. I have had the odd spinning beachball when adjusting the Colour Corrector but no crashes just running slow. Who knows if that is in any way Kona related though. In terms of your graphics card compatibility – it is listed on Avids website as being an approved card so you should be fine there. I have not got any experience of that particualr card though.
I think the KL box is compatible, the boxes are broadly card specific but I think the LHe and the plus are very similar cards so again should be good there but worth just getting your serial number and checking with AJA – I have always found the support very helpful, they will confirm.
Not wanting to be too cruel to Matrox but I used a Matrox MX02 with a V5.x Avid just before Xmas at a place I was working and also found it to be slow and stuttery at times. It would not be my choice of I/O with Avid.

Have to agree with Simon, it would be pretty much throwing good money after bad at this stage of the game.
Its a shame they didnt make it for Avid. There are of course probably lots of valid reasons why they didnt/couldnt but a really decent grading package is missing from Avid’s direct toolset.
Its true Avid and Baselight/Filmlight already offer pretty tight integration but Color beat anything Avid alone has hands down so Baselight on Avid could have been a really great addition.best wishes

March 21, 2012 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Canon 7D footage + Zoom h4n –> Slips out of sync (all sound is 48Khz 16bit) (Image 25p) in Avid works fine…I was basing my reply on a thread I was involved in last week where the same question was asked.
We currently change the audio speed to 99.89 (or something like that) to bring it back in sync.
We record all audio at 48,000 on the deck and camera, but it always slips out of sync. I’ve tried several times to get an answer for this but noone has had a decent one yet?!The answer was:
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have no idea why you would have to slow down the audio to 99.89%, or how you figured that out for that matter… but it worked!I have completed a couple of 5D projects without sync issue but this seems to come up again and again so I was wondering if I was just lucky.

March 21, 2012 at 3:51 pm in reply to: Has anyone used FCPX to cut a proper documentary for broadcast.[Jason Porthouse] “though your workflow (whilst perfectly fine) is ‘traditional’ in it’s conception.”
Whilst you may think this is somehow ‘traditional’ this is what just about every broadcast documentary has to go through.
At least in the UK where Sean and I are based.
In terms of programme delivery to broadcast stations there is a common file delivery format that is being agreed by UK broadcasters under the banner of the Digital Production Partnership.
From their website:“Through the DPP, seven major broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Channel 5, S4C and UKTV), have all agreed the UK’s first common file format,” . . . .
. . . After a period of piloting, file based delivery will be the preferred delivery format for these Broadcasters by 2014.”Of course that will not mean the end of tape delivery in 2014, just the beginning of file delivery.
So tape is going to be around for a while.
Obviously it will decline as a delivery format after 2014 however anyone making documentaries, especially those that use archive, which is many of them, are going to still be faced with archive and library sources from tape for years after that.
So as forward thinking as FCPX may or may not be, Apple’s tapeless utopia is still quite a way off.
Still at least they may just about have made it work by 2014.
Hi Sean – hope you are well.

Not only that but your kitchen will be called something like KROOOB or PLINK
Maybe just stick to Bravas Music then at least you will be tempted by something nice and shiny that does not make tea.
ps the chair advice was very good although if you really want a serious chair then Eames is the way to go but it will cost as much as your desk.

FCP can only input/output video via an i/o box/card so although you would not need the input of the box to capture you do need the output to display on your TV.
Its not an extension of your computer desktop – its a totally seperate video input/output.The Itensity Extreme that was suggested by Bret is probably about your cheapest option.
