its not that it wont work with 2GB of RAM but that is a very small about to have these days in any event. Even FCP7 could just about muster using a shade more than 2GB
FCPX though is RAM hungry, I saw someone say it will use just about all you can thrown at it.
Apple recommend a minimum of 4 GB but if you look at this you will being a 64 bit app it can use a lot more.I would say 8 or 16 would be ideal. Populate the top and bottom Ram holders equally would be the best config.
It will also help if you open other apps while running FCPX – 2Gigs is going to run out of steam pretty fast effects use or not.

Almost certainly H264 was the issue. FCP hates H264, it lulls you into a false sense of security by sometimes working but then does all kinds or random black screens, dodgy cuts, missing frames or slipping sync any amount of funky stuff really. Avoid it, use ProRes and then convert to H264 and you will have a much easier life.
If you shoot DSLR or other file based cameras follow this.

I recently got one of these and have to say very impressed. As long as you only need HD monitoring, which I do, this seems to work very well. The AJA TTap offers 2K monitoring and a few other bits and bobs but I didn’t need those. Tried it so far with FCPX, FCP Legacy and Avid Symphony 6.5. I had a really quick look at Resolve and that worked too so yes a really good and cost effective monitoring solution.

Here is a list of all the compatible cards, I have a Radeon HD 5770 which is a 1GIG card and works well with FCPX – check compatibility with your machine though.

The other thing is you need more RAM I would install as much as you can reasonably afford.
FCPX can use more RAM than the older FCP as it is 64bit so the more the merrier within reason. 8 minimum or 16 Gigs might be a good starting place.
One final thing – post your FCPX related questions in the FCPX Techniques Forum. Many more “X” users there to offer you advice, this is really the FCP7 (Legacy) forum. No worries though good luck.

Just to revisit Shane’s point about an I/O and indeed Joseph mentions this too. Even a calibrated computer monitor will not correctly display video.
This happens for all kinds or reasons, different colour spaces as mentioned, different scan rates and different native resolutions to mention just a few.
So the I/O bridges this gap and ensures correct monitoring of a video signal. Ideally this should be carried out an a calibrated video display. I reality we cant all afford or even need a fully calibrated broadcast monitor as we are not all making broadcast spec delivery to broadcasters. You can compromise with a decent plasma. (some of which can indeed be calibrated.) Or some of the “prosumer” monitors offer a usable solution. Sony and others have some smaller entry level monitors starting around £650 (UK) While perhaps not ideal for colour grading a broadcast show or feature you will get a much better idea of what is going on.
The advantage with these monitors is that depending on the model you buy they will likely have 1920×1080 panels that display HD natively. You will be able to more easily asses potential errors in interlacing as computer monitors can mangle those files. You often see posts here of people not being able to correctly work out if there are issues with interlacing/progressive and the answer is alway. “Look on a video monitor”
If you have a MAC that supports Thunderbolt then a really cost effective couple of monitoring solutions are the AJA TTap or Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Monitor.
If no Thunderbolt your options vary depending on your MAC but check out those companies as a starting point.
You are more likely to need an output solution rather than both in and out as I guess you capture from tapeless sources.
Anyway hope that helps in terms of why you might need one and what to look for.best wishes

What happens if you drop your H264 sequence into a ProRes 422 sequence first then export that ?

I dont know if having 2 x 650D’s with the rebel is adding to its confusion.
my plist file is below: In theory just change my 550D to 650 D and hopefully it will work. Hope that helps.
Edit: just noticed because I cut and paste the file it has filtered out a bunch of lines in the file.

Yes I found plenty of cables going the same way you have Bret. But the other way, it seems, is not allowed.
In any case Michael the Apple monitor, as nice as it may be as a computer monitor, is not going to make a good video monitor option. You really need something that is native 1920×1080 otherwise you are just going to get pixel mangling going on.
You should use an I/O and a video monitor, or otherwise you are going to end up not happy with the results one way or another.
AJA are my preferred choice, Blackmagic are pretty good but can have driver issues depending on the NLE. They seem slower at fixing problems than AJA.
Matrox is perfect for speeding up H264 creation if you have a “MAX” model but my least favourite I/O.best wishes

Which version of the Canon tool are you using ? My reason for asking is that I have a 550D (T3i) and the original release worked fine with the plist modification.
Then Canon updated it and indeed it would not work any more with the T3i however the latest version, which I got from the 5DMKIII software page now works again with the same plist mod as before. It seems likely the T4i would be the same ?So download the latest version, mod the file, I believe you heave to use 650D not t4i in the file and hopefully, like me, yours will work again.

If your captured footage matches the VHS then there is not much you can do to improve it in capture. As Shane says a model with a TBC might smooth out some of the “lumps and bumps” but you are not really going to get that much better.
What you might want to consider though is a plug-in called Neat Video. It is a fantastic de-noiser and will possibly improve your VHS footage quite a bit.
I think there is a free demo. Give it a go. Its going to cost you less than a Canopus but you will be in for some long renders if you have many hours of footage.best wishes
