June 21, 2017 at 5:23 pm in reply to: Good mics to use with cell phones?

Thanks to you both, Bill and Tom, for these responses, and sorry for my very slow reply here. I got sidetracked by other projects, and to be honest this one kind of falls between me and several other departments here. But this issue is definitely still with us. I understand both your points, and I looked at that product link Tom recommended. Just to confirm I assume that wouldn’t work well for panel-type set-ups, with up to five people, right Tom? (or anyone else familiar with that irig pre?) As Bill mentioned, it’s the panel set-ups, which are pretty common here, that are the big challenge.

I also heard from another B&H rep that the following link is another good alternative for set-ups like that.

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1079898-REG/tascam_us_4x4_4_channel_usb_audio.html

Any quick additional thoughts anyone? One thought I had was something like this irig pre and a mic that’s good at capturing a wider area, rather than just what’s right in front of it. Any guidance at all is much appreciated!

June 9, 2017 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Any experience with Pond5 subscriptions?

Thanks very much for responding John! Since then I’ve heard back from pond5 (exchange below) and was disappointed to learn that there really isn’t a discount on non-membership music clips, and I checked and found out I’ve only used non-membership music clips (which seem much better) in the past. So I’m still wondering how useful this membership would be, since music has been my main use, and whether I should ask my employer to pay the $300/year cost. Please let me know if you or anyone else here has thoughts/experience here. I haven’t checked out pond5’s stock footage option, but will make sure to do that.
    Much appreciated,
    Neil

    From pond 5:
    Hi Neil,

If you find you need clips which are not in the membership collection, it’s probably best to buy your tracks for the full price. There is no discount for non-membership clips inside or outside a membership.

If you purchase a Membership, it would be linked to the account which purchased it. That account would then be able to access 10 downloads per month from the Membership collection, in addition to anything else they purchased separately for full price.

February 27, 2017 at 4:45 am in reply to: How to reconnect PPro media on new external hard-drive?

Thanks very much Alex and David. I do have everything in one work folder with lots and lots of subfolders. Does anyone else have a preference between the two approaches mentioned by Alex and David, copying the folder structure normally and re-linking, versus cloning the harddrive using software like those apps David mentioned?

I really have only a few key projects the new person will likely use or care about?

  • Thank you so much Mark! And I apologize for the slow reply – it’s been a hectic time. These resources are very helpful, particularly those kinetic typography examples like you said. I was originally asking for my current employer, a foreign policy think tank. Also, since my original post I got a job with a science-related employer for which these kinds of approaches may be even more applicable. But I totally agree with your point about not letting the medium drive your message. Anyway, very helpful as always, thank you again!!!

  • Thanks Daniel. You were right on the frame rate issue. The PPro sequence that created the problem was 24 fps, where the problem went away when I created the sequence from the AFX export itself, which was a 29.97 fps sequence. I thought the original PPro sequence I’d created was 29.97.
    Much appreciated.

  • Thanks so much for the great info here Craig, and especially for referring to that sticky note on compression help, which I’ll be sure to check out. Sorry for the incomplete info – I work as a video producer a think tank, and make different kinds of videos here. Everything is uploaded to our Youtube channel. For some of these videos the audio is actually primary and the visual isn’t as important – it’s usually some kind of static graphic. A lot of those are for internal audiences here. But I also make marketing videos here for more of an external audience. It’s mainly for the first type of videos, the internal ones for which the visual is somewhat secondary, that I was originally asking the question about reducing the file sizes.

But this is all great info, because I also made videos outside my job here, and I’ve been a little foggy on certain aspects of compression for a while!

    Much appreciated again,
    Neil

  • Thanks for the response, Craig. I hear you and usually don’t try to reduce file size, but with some extremely long videos of multiple hours, I can get file sizes of 10+ gigbytes. So that starts to fill up my external hard-drive pretty fast, and sometimes these are videos where the viewers actually care more about the audio. I hear you about hard-drives being relatively cheap though. I’ve also wondered what the impact is of reducing, in the compression settings, things like the video’s target bit rate? I assume that would fall in the destructive category too right?
    Much appreciated,
    Neil

I hear you Mark! I didn’t mean to abuse your generosity – my apologies there – and am very grateful for your tremendous feedback and suggestions!
Have a good weekend, and thanks so much again.
