  • I really appreciate the quick and helpful replies, Mark and Dennis! Mark, that’s great advice to ask the client, or the AV vendor in this case: “What format do you want this in and what kind of a container?” Depending on who gets the question, from the AV company, it’s particularly helpful to consider all those specifics you shared on things like DCDM (Digital Cinema Distribution Master), DCP (Digital Cinema Package) and KDM (Key Delivery Message); so I can understand the options even if they don’t know, or don’t care too much. In the past, I’ve usually exported 2 options include one of the ProRes options, like 422, or one of the H.264 presets PPro offers like ‘High Quality 1080…’. But I haven’t put much thought into the nuances beyond that. Mark or Dennis, do either of you (or any others) have any take on how ‘high quality’ H.264 presets like that are, within PPro? I gather H.264 is never ‘high quality’ enough for projection at an event, right? So I’ll need to make sure I offer a better PC-friendly option, if H.264 is way too compressed no matter how ‘high quality.’ This isn’t for display at a movie theater, but the screens in the convention center or hotel ballrooms tend to be pretty big just the same. So I’ll try to work with the AV vendor to offer the truly highest quality, PC-friendly option I can, in addition to the ProRes option, using the type of considerations you two have mentioned. Thanks again!

    September 22, 2023 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Canon 5D Mark4 – 4K Video Problem

I have a Canon 5D Mk 4 and a C70, and a need to do a 2-camera shoot soon, in 4K if possible. Could anyone advise whether shooting 4K on both cameras would look strange (or is even possible), when I match up the clips in one video? TBH I’ve always favored full HD/1080, which has usually served our purposes, for the nonprofit I work at. But there’s a request to do this one in 4K, because of the need to project this speaker video on a large auditorium screen. I didn’t think was even possible on the 5D Mk 4, till I saw this video https://youtu.be/TyqePdqy-zQ?si=5-XdUhPYZMnO6wxf. Anyway, I was assuming I’d tell them I can’t/shouldn’t do both cameras in 4K, till I saw that video. And from the other posts here, it sounds like there are issues with the look of the 4K one can get from the 5D Mk 4? (and finally there’s the question of how it would match up with the C70’s 4K.) I’m grateful for any guidance or thoughts!

If anyone else has feedback on this, I’d also appreciate responses to 2 specific questions: Is lighting for green screen photography the same as lighting for green screen video shoots? Also, does keying out the green work the same in Photoshop that it works in After Effects?

  • What do people think of Canva for very basic video editing needs, for (video) beginners? Since posting my original question here, I discovered that my employer has a Canva account, so I tested the video editor. But it wouldn’t let me upload a clip larger than 1 GB in size, although when I googled this question, it said it can handle up to 5. Again our main need, which I’m finally returning to researching, is empowering laypeople at my employer to do basic video editing tasks, like removing unwanted portions from Zoom recordings, or perhaps editing out the start or end of a self-taped video recording they make on their phone. My colleagues mainly use Canva for other needs, like cropping photos and the like, but I wondered if anyone has used Canva for video, when I saw it has a video editor function included. Also a belated thanks Patricia for this helpful list of options! This is great, and that’s good to know Zoom has a video editor included too, which I’ll try out as well.

Thank Michael. I originally posted this question, which has generated some great and helpful responses, like yours here. Unfortunately, I’ve been distracted by deadlines the last couple of weeks, and been unable to really dig into this. But my IT colleagues connected me with sales people from Dropbox, since they’re still considering upgrading our account or something, and wanted to know if I wanted these features, which I still really don’t know how to answer (and after reading posts like yours, wonder if I should just pass on this opportunity for a sales schpeel from Dropbox reps). Looking back at this, I was interested that you don’t like Dropbox Replay, which I’ve still never used, for client review. Looking for a bit more info, I just watched this video review https://youtu.be/QycEl2s16dU, which compares Replay with frame.io. Just wondering, if you get a chance to watch the comparison part that starts around 1:16, if you agree or disagree with anything he says on Dropbox Replay advantages (or this changes your take in any way)? Thanks either way for your recent response!

Your survey of the options was so helpful Mads, and thanks to Tod and Steve as well! You make a great point about the importance of ease of use for the client, and it’s interesting that you and Tod agree on that but come to opposite verdicts on Vimeo. Tod, may I ask, when you share vimeo drafts with clients, do you have them use the frame-accurate feature? And do you happen to know if you need more than a basic account to use that? These other options like Hightail and Screenlight sound interesting as well, and I’ll definitely give them a look. Thanks so much again to all of you!

Never mind on that last question. I figured it out.

March 29, 2023 at 3:30 pm in reply to: Transitioning from Mark IV to C70-tips or resources?

May I ask a last question on this? What’s the quickest way to white balance with the C70? With my Mark III or IV, I’d just snap a photo of a white card (or sheet of paper) near my subject’s face, and use it for the reference image to get the white balance. On the C70 I see different controls that still seem foreign after all my DSLR use. Will definitely look to learn more nuanced exposure methods like those Riccardo suggested above, but I’m just wondering what’s the quickest method while I learn those nuances to get a quick white balance (like for my test shots, without a subject in them)?

    Thanks, Neil

Great tips and will do, thanks Ricardo! Very interesting on color science, and I could definitely could use some instruction there. Will look into all of it, thanks again!
