  • Canon 5D Mark4 – 4K Video Problem

    Hi guys.
I have Canon 5D mark 4 and it can shoot 4K videos in MJPEG format. When i tried to edit this video in FCPX it seems laggy and not smooth. I think it’s about for MJPEG format because it’s normal in the camera screen playback . And 1080P ALL-I & IPB videos are seems normal and ok too in Editing or viewing softwares. Do you have any suggestions to solve for this issue ? By the way thats problem not just happen in FCPX it is the same in Prewiew, Quick time and etc. players

It is a big codec to decode. Try this. Run a short clip through Compressor and convert to your preferred flavor of ProRes. Import that into FCPX. How does the clip perform? Or you can have FCPX convert to Proxy files and then link back to master clips for color grade.

Personally, I’d go the ProRes route.

I have a Canon 5D Mk 4 and a C70, and a need to do a 2-camera shoot soon, in 4K if possible. Could anyone advise whether shooting 4K on both cameras would look strange (or is even possible), when I match up the clips in one video? TBH I’ve always favored full HD/1080, which has usually served our purposes, for the nonprofit I work at. But there’s a request to do this one in 4K, because of the need to project this speaker video on a large auditorium screen. I didn’t think was even possible on the 5D Mk 4, till I saw this video https://youtu.be/TyqePdqy-zQ?si=5-XdUhPYZMnO6wxf. Anyway, I was assuming I’d tell them I can’t/shouldn’t do both cameras in 4K, till I saw that video. And from the other posts here, it sounds like there are issues with the look of the 4K one can get from the 5D Mk 4? (and finally there’s the question of how it would match up with the C70’s 4K.) I’m grateful for any guidance or thoughts!

Not sure what you ended up doing, but I shoot all my video on the 5D IV at 4K, even though I export at FHD. When I edit in Premier Pro I always create low quality proxies using an ffmpeg script first, and then editing is much smoother. Shooting at 4K means I can crop it down in post if I want to zoom in and helps other effects too.
