Alot of people picked them up when they were selling battle tested epics for $3999 a year or two ago. I know a bunch of people personally who got one.
And yes, there a dime a dozen in L.A and the operators to go with them. Even the surf industry/ community (ie, not a ton of money) is pretty much all exclusively using RED. Its a trip.

“That just looks like a messy editor to me – you can choose to do or not is the point and to the extent you do it as well. That guy clearly went a little overboard but it may all make sense to him.
I personally color code certain things like SFX and Music Cues – stuff I get back from the GFX team, colored different than my temp GFX, etc.
Its really handy actually and when used in a team can really help your finisher know whats what, or another editor that picks up the project at a later date.

“i think while FCPX is faster and more efficient on the Pre cutting phase ( spotting/logging/organizing), I dont think Avid can be beat for actual timeline editing, especially if you exploit the shortcuts, IMO.

To answer the question about Avid – they havent changed the MCAM feature yet to get with the times.
Once setup, it works great and solid, and you can commit your edits with no issues and it wont cut audio with every scene change – but setting it up is still a pain if theres cameras that start/stop thru a shoot. If not, its pretty easy to setup.
That said with the new proxy workflow in 8.3 i was happily cutting 6 angles of 4k at 1/16 resolution with no frames dropping and not a huge loss of picture quality on a pretty humble machine. Was surprised to get this performance.

The update manager way of upgrading worked fine for me. There was an update to the app manager itself that i did before i tried to update the app itslef, maybe thats why you guys are having trouble. Once i updated the app manager, deactivated my license, clicked install, re activated and i was good to go.

Must say im pretty impressed!
Multicam is back in working order.
Trimming is good with Blackmagic hardware (driver 9.9.3). Caps Lock/Scrub is tight and responsive.
I tried the 4K workflows out. My I7 Imac was playing back AMA’d 4kRED clips in proxy 1/16 with no problem.
Transcoded to DNxHR HQ and it played back no proxy Full Quality with no lag! Didnt think i’d ever get native (to avid) 4K playback on this thing at decent quality. Pretty impressed I have to say. The Proxy implementation is pretty effin slick. LUTs as FX on the timeline is sweet!
New Bin search/find/sorting thing is really cool.
App feels pretty snappy and responsive overall in compared to the last couple version. Background Service’s running right, etc. I think Avid might have just come thru in the nick of time. Cant wait to try it on a computer with some juice!

dude, you should probably check again. Avid has had tons of metadata support for a long long time, and recently the search/find functions has been updated to exploit it better, not to mention the recent addition of favorites bins which work great.
you can also add anything you want with custom columns like your tempo,lyricist, etc and then save that as a custom bin which is also searchable and has been available for as long as i can remember.

“I agree, paper cuts made from transcripts hardly ever work because of expression, and connotation. When a producer hands me one, I always ask if they watched the interview. usually they dont 🙁
