I think it’s great you’re telling them about other avenues other than what you’re teaching them.
If a student wants to get into features and high end tuff in major markets it would be a disservice to them if they didn’t know how to use Avid. FCPX may or may not be the future of editorial but in the present it is most certainly not for the majority of people. I think it’s worth learning for sure at this point but around these parts it’s making close to zero inroads.
I didn’t know ONE student when I went to film school that DIDNT want to work in features. It was a different time than today, even TV was largely looked down upon but I still can’t picture kids in school who want to work in Editing doing all this training because it’s their dream to do travelogue videos or snapchat stories for an up and coming tech firm. (not insinuating thats all X is capable of, just thats the type of work I see openings for here in LA)

I still feel like my maxed 2015 imac is a beast for editorial. Im not a fan of trying to edit native, and always transcode at some point but 4k no problem, All the NLE’s running smooth, even Davinci. I have zero complaints or zero need to upgrade anytime soon.
My work has 30 rooms with these setups for high end short form and i don’t really ever hear anyone complain they need more juice but its typically an offline workflow as well.
I personally dont know alot of places that edit with native media.

“I agree, I think when I client goes somewhere out of house, they do that thinking they have and are paying for the best creatives in that their given field. The know thier getting a editor at the top of the game, but also music supervision, graphics, finishing all from people who specialize it each profession. Not one guy that is bad ass editor, but can manage with gfx, color, and has okay music sensibilities and knows legal specs.

Wow Bill, if some of those features that Oliver listed were implemented, more people might take X a little more seriously and more people might use X. Good thing no? A lot of those things, like timecode views and UI customizations and dupe detections are basic and would go a loooooong way.
There’s gotta be something you wish X could do or did differently.

no one is trying to impress anything on anyone. He just simply starts saying Avid is dead, no one in their right mind would use it etc etc. Its a joke.
I fully understand and embrace the niche I work in. No one in this thread tried to say anything otherwise. He just came in with his too little too late, Avid’s dead blah blah b.s that he’s known for spouting as if its in fact, when in fact he obviously has no clue whats going outside HIS little bubble and thats fine too.

I dont think thats the case. I think Avid is well aware of what markets and niche they live in. I think this is just for students, aspiring film students/ filmmakers to get a taste of what Media Composer is about and thats it. Bait them with this so they eventually pay for the whole enchilada. I dont think there going after the youtube/social media market at all. It wouldn’t sell any of their hardware.
I have a question for you Robin.
If you had one of your students pull you aside and tell you, “Sir, it is my dream to work on hollywood feature films and ill do anything to get there” You wouldn’t recommend they learn how to use Avid?

Well gee… can I guess? You work in southern CA… with Avid? ???? Because only someone in that setting could make such a painfully solipsistic claim and think it’s true, if by “the software” you actually mean Avid MC. Yes I do live in Southern California and yes the company I work for use’s Avid. Whats your point?
I apologize for choosing to base my career in a major market. I wont let it happen again.
Just because you dont live in a market where Avid still thrives, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Can we be honest about the “background” rendering/ transcoding though?
Absolutely nothing is happening in the background. I feel like ignore this when touting this “feature”
It only starts working when you stop working. Look how Avid implemented it. Keeps rendering when you work and you have the option ot make it pause or not if your system is up to snuff. Now only if Avid added background saving.
