just installed to try out the media composer beta. Dont do alot of heavy lifting at home but everything seems to working like normal. no os issues with Catalina and nothing crazy in Media Composer 2020.3 thats wasnt already a bug in 2019
again – i dont use a computer like some of you guys with a gillion plugins and 3rd party support apps so YMMV. So far jut Avid, emails and Chrome, and some apps like pages/preview etc.

i am guilty of sticking clips at the end of the timeline – even in FCPX. sometimes Ill put a clip in, decide it doesnt go there and then throw it to the rear to put somewhere else later because its quicker FOR ME to just grab it from there, then go back to the library or favorites. No need to leave the timeline, and I always see it dangling at the end there so I dont forget about it. Some dsys that “bank” at the end gets pretty long and messy but this works for me. I also still use stringouts – YES even in FCPX.. its crazy how I get any work done.

a little confused – why wouldnt quicktime work? Im on a new 13inch macbook pro with catalina watching prores and dnxhd/hr quicktimes all day long.

with how much all of the 4 major NLE’s are borrowing from each other these days – i cant figure out why the other 3 just dont copy Avids multiuser approach?

not a valid comparison – because in your case things got cheaper and eaier for you. In this case its a bunch of 20 something year olds with generally no idea what a real post production workflow pipeline is telling me I need this computer that is more expensive than anything else on the market.
All I need to do my job is a base level imac. Anything else is overkill IMO.

i hate this way of thinking and its why alot of editors are stuck on old equipment.
The last place i was at the post supe was putting together a bid for all new mac pros. we do shortform trailers and promos. at the very most we could easily do our jobs on regular old imacs and I bet his bid woulda been approved lickety split and we would have had all new computers that work. Instead we are on 2010 cheesgraters that cant be updated and the company wont spring for nMP’s so the IT guy says were stuck. I ask him why he didnt do Imacs and he said because you guys need PRO computers.
i told him to get out of my bay.

Believe it or not – alot of people still use these.
Im on one as I type. Not mine personally but the company I work for. Its still a beast for editorial.
Its got 128 gigs of ram and a 16gig titan x gfx card. Internal SSD raid. It flies. Unfortunately its stuck on high Sierra for good now but up until that this is still chugging along making the company plenty of money while having been paid off for 8 years.

Also Avid will support Pro Res Raw which is cool too.
