Right I understand that you have to be careful about opening two projects at the same time but we would never do that. We won’t really be doing that whole “dynamic collaboration” thing. I just want 4 editors to be able to hit ONE shared media drive all at the same time. My intention for sharing media would go like this:
Editor 1 starts a project in a folder on the SAN and puts all his media in that project folder. It’s a raw camera file folder, straight from a camera media card. He copies it to the root of the project folder. Then he imports the raw into a bin and starts editing.
Editor 2 starts ANOTHER project and needs 2 shots from Editor 1’s media. Is there any penalty for him to browse to Editor1’s raw camera data folder and import 2 clips into his OWN bin. Now the two are editing from the same media.
Am I in the ball bark here? Or am I way out in left field?
Thanks
Nate

December 18, 2013 at 5:17 pm in reply to: Black Magic Mini Monitor and Newertek USB 2.0 to DVI on iMacI think I may have just figured out a problem here. I found this disclaimer on the Macsales Site just under the product description for the Newertek adapter.
Note: This release does not support OpenGL acceleration (3D hardware acceleration) so therefore applications and features that require OpenGL, Quartz Extreme, Quartz Composer and other framework based on OpenGL will not be fully supported. Examples of such features are Keynote Presentations, iPhoto Slideshows and iMovie.
So I’m guessing maybe this newertek product is not the way to go. Perhaps the Matrox Docking Station DS1 HDMI would actually do the trick?
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Matrox/DS1HDMI/
It’s got HDMI out and I would probably try to use that for my second computer monitor for my events and clips. Then it’s got a thunderbolt port which I would connect my Black Magic MiniMonitor to and from there to a TV, that gets me my program out. Does anyone have experience with the Matrox DS1?Nate

December 18, 2013 at 2:38 am in reply to: Black Magic Mini Monitor and Newertek USB 2.0 to DVI on iMacHi Bret,
You have it correct, I want two computer monitors that are essentially for the FCPX interface. One would be the main interface where the projects and windows are and the other computer monitor would be on this device on a USB 2.0 port:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/VIDU2DVIA/
…which is mac compatible. Then in FCPX I would choose to “SHOW EVENTS IN SECOND DISPLAY” which allows me to have a nice large view of all my events and clips. My Thunderbolt port is then available for the MiniMonitor. And yes I would then get a TV or some other Monitor that would accept the HDMI out of the MiniMonitor. And there you have it, two computer monitors for the application and one tv monitor for program out.
Can anyone else chime in here who has used either of these products? Basically I just want to know if this would in theory work. In other words I want to make sure there won’t be some sort of resource conflict.
Thanks.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the info. The edit may not require 4k monitoring per se. The footage will be a mix of 2k and 4k material from Canon C300’s and C500’s. It’s hard to say if there will be any grading. So for now I will have to stick with 1080i monitoring. Again, many thanks!

Gentlemen Both,
This info is just pure gold to someone like me so first of all THANK YOU!Gary the info on the storage requirements is also very helpful and I will keep that in mind. I was thinking of monitoring with my second monitor using Thunderbot to DVI. Then I put the Viewer on the second display. Not perfect but does work. Should I be considering the Black Magic Intensity Extreme?
Thanks,

Hi Oliver,
Glad to see I wasn’t far off! So the playback prefs need to be switched back to original media before export huh? I would have missed that. I thought that was automatic so I’m glad I asked! Thanks!
Have you had any experience with a Pegasus Thunderbolt Raid or are you running traditional PCI card raids? It’s so hard to know which raid is best but all I’ve really got to work with is Thunderbolt.

Thanks to both of you for the reply. It looks like 240 gig is going to be a good choice! Much appreciated!

I’m using a Dell 2408WFBb monitor which has a variety of inputs including analog RGB (or Y-Pb-Pr) and HDMI but NO HD-SDI!!! You can get an HD-SDI to HDMI converter but as you can see if you look at this post I’m actually sorting out a problem with just such a device right now!
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/98/878585
I’ve had pretty good luck with that Dell using analog RGB but it takes a while to tweak it to look close to what’s on the desktop. Really it is better to get a monitor that has HD-SDI inputs but that ups the price considerably. Others could chime in. It just depends on what you need to do. Client monitor? The Dell or equivalent probably will be just fine. Color Correcting? I don’t trust it, I use my desktop monitors if I’m doing a 3-way color correction in FCP.
Hope that helps.
