It’s crazy how many people can take that one position during a production…you should make a wikipedia article of it…I mean ive heard of it a couple times, but no detailed average explination for it.

You could use IDVD, depending on the circumstances of your project…it’s rendering capabilities aren’t the best, but do a fine job in my eye. The only problem I see with it is that it takes forever to encode things. If you are doing this for a client and would like the best render quality possible…I would look into apple’s compressor:

It’s not too complicated and you can customize your own settings and create the presets you want for rendering…I have used it a little bit, but just look what it’s done with apple’s trailers, quality-wise. Hope this helps!

You could try marking in and out points for the specific spot you want to hear after your roll edit anywhere on the timeline if you know the shortcut. Hope that helps.

I did a similar project during my sophomore year at my college, but instead had the beam comming out from someone’s fingers in the shape of a pointed gun… take a look

What I did was use the beam effect with a lense flare and then threw a gif in there at the end (which could also be created through shatter as well). I am not too knowledgable with particle motion paths right now, but I hope that helps!
