I didn’t think this post would make for such comments from media pros. It is valid info, that has been discussed many times on this forum. I want to be informed more than my clients, I want to be informed more than my competition. Some of the responses sound like that French New Wave Movie where they burn the books and I didn’t think we had book burners here.

I suppose I should have posted the New York Times Article also — https://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/01/technology/01hack.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin

and then you might have more fully understood the signifacance of this. HD-DVD is different than Blue Ray HD-DVD because in the Blue Ray format the Key codes that are the lock can be reset to another key for protection without killing the player. HD-DVD has only one Key code possibility if I read the article correctly. So the result is that Sony’s Blue Ray is gaining favor. I will be burning DVD that are HD before the end of the year. I have cleints asking the questions. Don’t you? How do you answer them if you are not informed. My next Apple computer will have an HD-DVD burner in it and I will bet that Apple will put a Blue Ray version in it, about the end of June………

(PS: I don’t care if you own a gun, I don’t. I don’t care if you point the gun at a cop, I pay the cop to shoot you first ask questions latter. Less competition, that way)

Ah, Cinewave RT… Now I know why……. Well, hopefully mine will can stay on life support till April and all the new FCP upgrades. (Walter are you saying that the Kona 3, doesn’t have real time chroma keys or multi codecs in the same time line??)

I am surprised that everybody commented on Software issues… and not the first mention of mastering or delivering on Blue Ray or HD DVD…. With HD DVD players under $500 bucks is there still no interest or client demand for HD DVD or Blur Ray Masters or release versions?

Am I just out here by myself hoping for a True HD/Blue Ray DVD burner and software for the Mac Pro.??

When Chromakey comes up here as a subject. You ussually have someone suggest Graem Nattress plug in filters… He is supposed to have a great DV Chromakey filter, that is affordable… I do Betacam SP myself, so I have never needed it. Let us know your results.

  • Back in ’89 when I purchased my first big gear 3/4″ edit suite, Betacam SP shoot, and my favorite 3D animation and graphic machine. I got the 3d animation /graphic machine , a Pinnacle 3000 which was a DOS 386 running Chrystal Graphics 3D (Topaz) and At&T TIPS Painter for a discounted demo price of $32K the salesman told me I would never need a Hard drive bigger than 100gig. And it was a big 100gig MFN hard drive.. That Pinnacle 3D with machine control sold a lot of work. That bleeding edge is always exspensive.

Time is money and frustration. If you can afford the new Mac Pro’s get one…. And enjoy the extra time fishing or playing golf or what ever….. Make sure that you get a great certified array also… I have been working with a Dual gig Mac for the last three years and it has been great cause I got a big Medea array to feed it more than it would ever want…..

You can’t cheap out on gear, it will always embarass you at the wrong moment.

David, David are you getting your last edit confused with your real life. I didn’t think video editors were allowed to take the time to have girlfriends…..

I scrolled down,,, and if you were doing a survey I would agree with Derek that the new Mac on the block is not pumping up the FCp masses.. Is it the flat economy or the $10,136 with the Apple warranty and 8gigs ram that reminded me that it isn’t on my Christmas list this year. Maybe it is the Intel chip.

    Chris,

I have the same problem, dumb clients – who don’t want to understand – the best practice for archiving their edits. So, I went to Compusa, picked up an external firewire enclosure (for DVD burners) and their basic 19 dollar removable Hard drive bay. The Hard drive trays are only 15 bucks and it only took an hour, 2 drill holes and 2 pop rivets to assemble. Now I – SHOW – clients where I am going to store their edits. The client can buy the Hard drive and tray to keep at their office or mine. If I just store their edit on my hard drive Hot swap removeable, I tell them it is only going to be there for six months for re-edits or until I need the HD space for another client. But I buy hard drives for storage like candy when they are on sale I just don’t tell the client everything. I encourage them to be responsible for their media. IF they don’t care, translates into a money making oportunity later.

Thanks Walter, I will have to hoist a few cold brews to this ‘Key’ dude in my career. I have done alot of chroma key work. Chroma key makes for very affordable TV Spots. I can’t imagine video with out it.
